A mother in Shanghai left her son to watch 'educational videos' on her smartphone but returned to find it had been locked for 25 million minutes.

Apple's iPhones can be set to lock out anyone trying to use them if a wrong passcode is entered with the lockout period increasing with each failed attempt, but it is not clear how many times the child typed in the wrong numbers.

Well at least it’s not locked permanently.

Here is your birthday present son. You can open it in 48 years.

Really the more I think about this. Only Apple would be stupid enough to not put a cap on the number of minutes that could be added.

It’s an algorithm that squares the time to wait in minutes.

So the first miss is minimal. Then after several tries it goes to a minute. Then two minutes, then four, then sixteen, and so forth. You can get pretty high, pretty fast.

This is bogus. After 10 attempts, the iPhone locks the phone and erases the data. There’s no such thing as a 48 year lock out wait to try another passcode.

iPhone and iPad passcode tries wait times:

Failed Attempts........Added Waiting Time........Total Waiting Time
1 to 5.......................................none....................................none
6th........................................1 minute...............................1 minute
7th.......................................5 minutes..............................6 minutes
8th......................................15 minutes............................21 minutes
9th......................................60 minutes............................81 minutes
10th....................................60 minutes...........................141 minutes
11th...................................Black Screen......................Wiped Device
See, no 48 year delay. Not possible.

This was in Shanghai, so it was probably a knockoff “iPhrone.”

I had an older iPhone with the 4X child feature.

That is, my child entered the incorrect password 4 times in a row and it erased all my info from the phone: Numbers, photos, et al.

This was before the cloud, which would be a good thing if I was, say, Jennifer Lawrence and had photos of my butt hole on the phone. But I am boring and don’t have any butt hole photos on my phone.

I strongly suspect the phone will run out of power somewhat before the 48 years is up.
