Meet the Swansea Valley man who creates works of art around the world
We sculpted a design of two Detroit urban pheasants, which run wild in the city.
Amazingly, out of a field of 100 sculptors, from 25 teams, we came third. I hope this is a sign of things to come in our need for collaboration in the Brexit world!
Then I captained my old Welsh team in a competition held in Pontebba, Italy. The town is situated in the Italian Dolomite mountains on the borders between Austria and Slovenia.
In a field of eight teams, including two local teams and teams from as far away as Canada, we came first. Yes, we won our first event with our design called, Eat the Apple. This was based on a theme from the Adam and Eve biblical story. It was clever in the way we hid the snake in the leaves of the apple. The Italian art judges loved it. We were overjoyed and so proud to be flying the flag for Wales; and succeeding.
More recently Mr Annaly, who creates works of art out of huge blocks of compacted snow, was in Canada showing the locals how it is done.
Now that is what you call a snow sculpture! (Image: Oliver Annaly)
The Apple of Eden (Image: Oliver Annaly) He said: I have just returned, it was a Symposium of art in Edmonton, Canada. No prizes here, Just a chance to demonstrate the abilities of Welsh craftsmanship in Alberta, Canada. So much history between us. We did an educational sculpture of The Owl and the Pussycat, from the poem by Edward Lear, in a boat on the high seas. We got good local and national press.
Mr Annaly, who works with stone most of the year, said he enjoyed the change of medium. Its a obviously a lot quicker, he said.

And come the warmer weather he will be found in the Brecon Beacons.
He said: I was working on a Roman fort near Brecon and a borders castle near Hay-on-wye before my winter break, and as soon as the weather allows I will be out in Wales again, restoring our great heritage.
Cool. I love ruins.
That’s really neat.
It's true, I almost hit a rooster that flew from my right to left when I was driving to work on Detroit's east side and its wing clipped my windshield.........
As a side note, I was helping increase the opossum population by releasing the critters I trapped at my house a block away from the plant while driving to work....raccoons too.........LOL!
