"the RSPB placed mini rat motels across the area filled with cocoa and peanut butter flavoured wax blocks to catch them."

We need these for the Senate.

Crazy headline... “Lured to captivity”???? More like lured to their deaths. Geesh. Journalists can’t even write a story saying that rats were killed.

My mother used to catch mice with bacon, but I learned as an adult they are CRAZY about peanut butter.

No, in this case, the rats were probably caught, shipped to California, and then released there.

"No borders!", yuh know...

Some years ago, some activists showed up at a city council meeting in the People's Republic of Takoma Park (MD), which sits just over the DC line to the north. The local politics are infamously progressive. The activists asserted that Takoma Park's rat poisoning program was inhumane and must be stopped. Apparently still on a crunchy granola high, the council agreed and voted to institute humane trapping.

No one, of course, bothered to ask what Takoma Park would do with the rats once trapped. Eventually, however, a sane person surfaced and posed the question. The response from a city official was timeless: "rats are wild animals and we should release them back into a wild environment, so we thought we might take them up to Frederick County [still rather rural at the time] and release them there."

This almost started CWII, but the crisis was averted. I almost regret this. Had Takoma Park pressed its release plan, Frederick County would have blown all the bridges, mined all the roads, and fortified the border. The northern suburban sprawl might have been stopped in its tracks right there.

"...meaning none of the creatures have been recorded on the Isles for two years, meeting the internationally agreed criterion for rat-free status."

Who knew there was an internationally agreed upon criterion for such things?

Least the bridge from Leesburg to Poolesville hasn’t been built (yet)

Like to see at least 1/2 of the Fed agency moved to other parts of the country (like Detroit!). Would be cheaper than the cost of buying up all the property next to the beltway and 270, let alone the construction costs.

Shiant Isles

"The Shiants is a group of rocky islands in the Minch, lying four miles to the east of Lewis with a large seabird population including a colony of tens of thousands of puffins. It is owned by the islands’ only (part-time) inhabitant Adam Nicolson, who inherited these islands from his father, who had bought them in 1937 after answering a newspaper ad—”Uninhabited islands for sale. Outer Hebrides, 600 acres. . . . Puffins and seals. Apply.”
