I personally stopped and talked with some teachers who've walked out. The schools won't give and the teachers are ready to strike.

The problem is after 8 years of Zero and his war on coal the WV state economic turnip has been squeezed as far as it will go. I predict boom times there soon due to Trump, but is not there yet. However as with all government unions economics are never in the calculation. If we (the union) have the pull in the legislature to make the taxpayer fork it over he will. I don’t know do for sure but I imagine the whole things been made much worse by over hiring and good old fashion featherbedding.

I agree but I also agree with the teachers. It’s unreasonable what’s being asked of them. Esp when the people on the board are overpaid ne’er-do-wells.

Probably so!
In the past way back when I lived in WV, the school boards were where the local county/city political powers parked ne’er do-well relatives & idiot son-in-laws. I guess that’s still the case.

I assume the headline writer meant ‘Teachers’ instead of “Teacher’s’. I thought one teacher was staging a walk out.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The reasons have just been piling up this week, haven't they?

Maybe it's time the governor grew a set of big brass ones, and decertify the teachers’ unions - then give the strikers twenty-four hours to either return to the classrooms or seek other employment. Next, he should start cleaning up the corruption within the various boards of education, starting at state level. If I remember correctly, that action sure got the Air Traffic Controllers’ attention!

I think the guv will only have direct authority over the state education board. The county boards are another matter, way back when I lived there they were notorious for nepotism, cronyism and corrupt practices. I’ve always wondered how the state distributes education money to the counties. There are 55 counties in WV. Many of them now have very small populations. I used to look at them and wonder how they paid law enforcement (sheriffs department, etc), fire and schools. The state clearly must pick up most of the tab. Maybe that’s the governors leverage?

I had some sympathy for the teachers...until the strike. Many I’ve spoken to feel the same way, although are reluctant to say so openly. The teachers have lost a lot of support and I predict will lose more the longer they drag this out.

A lot of people would be ecstatic to make the “low” salaries the teachers quote, neglecting to mention they only work 9 months and have every conceivable holiday off. A lot of the people hearing this have equivalent or better degrees and are making less, working far longer hours, and for worse benefits. Now they have to find a way to deal with their children being off while the teachers throw their illegal and contract-violating temper tantrum.

But you won’t see the local news digging very deep to report that side.
