Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” is re-writing the record books, topping “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” for the second-highest four-day domestic opening of all time, with $242 million at 4,020 North American locations.

The superhero pic set a record for top Monday domestic gross ever, with $40.2 million, edging the previous high set by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $40.1 million. The Monday total came in $7 million above the studio’s projections and lifted the four-day haul to $242 million.

“Black Panther” has grossed the second-highest four-day total of all time, behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $288.1 million and $400,000 ahead of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Disney also reported Tuesday that the international total has reached $184.6 million to lift the worldwide take to $426.6 million, led by South Korea at $27.1 million and the U.K. at $26.7 million

That's even higher than estimates. Will be interesting to see how much it drops in week#2.

I’m sure they’re already thinking about the sequel.

It’s going to be a franchise!

When adjusted for inflation, Black Panther finishes behind Force Awakens, Jurassic World and The Avengers.

It’s getting a lot of help:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/comic-riffs/wp/2018/02/16/how-celebrities-are-helping-thousands-of-children-see-black-panther-for-free/?utm_term=.e2555ea0672c

“THE THEME of giving back to your community runs strong through “Black Panther,” so it’s only fitting that campaigns and charity efforts have sprung up with one mission in mind: to help disadvantaged kids, many them of color, see Marvel’s ultimate black superhero come to their neighborhood.”

Have not seen it and don’t plan to see it.
But the Black Panther is a much better role model
than Jesse High Jackson or Al Sharpton.

I wonder how many ticket sales were in fact “phantom” ticket sales?

Yeah, that movie had more shootings than the typical Chicago weekend.
Not that I saw the film, now will I, but I must ask...
“Who were the 163 people shot” and why are so many flocking to watch the carnage? Just curious.
This is the first mass shooting film I am aware of where the number of shooting victims are well publicized.

No surprise given our racist volksgeist: Negroes are wonderful and holy; whites are evil and Negroes should kill them.

Meh, I saw the live show in 1968.

Don’t care if the SFX are better this time.

and these are the same celebs who would rather die than mix with black people and instead live in gated white neighborhoods in the valley. Liberal white guilt is a bitch..

I’m guessing that the number of black kids who get to see the movie for free will number between 10,000 and 1 million.

exactly. I’ve had a hunch that if blacks are the minority more than hispanics, how could they pack the movie house? A group of people were paying for it..

Can’t leave out Hispanics or other minorities. Many will get to see it for free, as well.

This guy is a real black superhero: Robert Smalls: A slave who stole a Confederate military transport, wore a stolen uniform from the Captain to impersonate him, sailed her to Union vessels past Confederate vessels using the stolen code book and hand signals, convinced the Union to fully allow blacks to fight for the union, and successfullyran for Congress in the South after the war.

THAT would make a great movie, wouldn't it? But it will never be told, because that would highlight the Republican stance towards slavery, as well as Democrat complicity in keeping slavery, so...that movie will never be made.

As for this movie, I won't see it. There are plenty of CGI based superhero movies that don't masquerade as a politically correct lesson on slavery. I am not knocking those who go, that is their business, it just isn't for me.
