Has anybody here used an online tax service to file their taxes?
If someone offers you a valuable online service 'free' (especially one that collects personal information).... then YOU are the actual product being sold.
Been using free tax usa since 2005 always satisfied wiht their service. You can even find coupons online for a small discount with them.
Yes, I’ve been using freetaxusa for over a decade now. It’s not as free as the name might suggest, but it’s only a few bucks.
I’ve been using TurboTax for 12 years and have never had a problem - and we’ve got a bit of a complicated return.
They have a free offering for 1040EZ/1040A, I recommend them highly.

I use TaxAct. I itemize and have rental property.
They cover everything. You can get a refund any way you want.
They have my taxes going back 7 years. They will even file your extension if need be at internet speed.
No, all you do is type in what your W-2s say, it’s very easy. It tells you “type the amount on what line 1 says” and then it goes step by step “type down what line 2 says” etc etc. I had a lot of W-2 because I freelance as a truck driver and it took a while, but it handled the federal and state tax for me then it asked for the routing number to my bank account and 2 weeks later I got the return deposited right into my bank account, absolutely no cost.
This year though I’m in trouble as I worked for this one idiot last year from January to March and I got into a fight with him because he wasn’t paying me what I was owed so I quit and now he sent me a W-2 claiming I paid almost no taxes and like an idiot I threw away my pay stubs so I have no record of what I paid and he isn’t about to give me a correct W-2 so if I file what he put down I’m going to have to owe taxes so I’m trying to find out from the IRS if they have a record of what taxes were taken out. I swear, there are so many a*sholes in the trucking biz. But yeah, if you have a legit W-2 freetax is VERY easy and legit, they get you the refund fast as hell.
But do you have to follow up by sending your documents in to the IRS? And how about state taxes?

I usually recommend TurboTax or TaxAct (I use TurboTax)...free for “simple” returns (1040a or 1040ez) and “low-income” (<$60K). The IRS also has a new “free-file” option this year:

From freefile my tax return refund was $500 less than Turbo tax.
Compared others also. Turbo is better.

You only paid the penalty if you got a refund. No refund, no penalty/.

How old are you people?
I havent mailed a return in ten years. If you are not running a business out of your house, why are you going to an accountant?
Even when I ran my own business I didn’t use a CPA.
These are personal returns, not brain surgery.
It’s time to move into the 20th century now that is been over for 17 years.
I have used Turbo Tax for the last 3 years. Cost about 40 dollars.
I found it easy, and it was filed on line, which is nice since I live in the Philippines and worried the form would be lost in the mail.
However, I am retired and single, so that might not be true if you have a more complicated filing to do.
however, the IRS site had a free simple program for folks who had uncomplicated tax filing to do.
when my husband and I worked in the US we always used an accountant...a doctors, we were “high risk” to get audited and had business deductions.
When we retired, he advised he didn’t need to do our taxes and it was cheaper to just do them on line.
H&R Block Online—which I haven't tried yet—will do it for FREE even if you do itemize. I heard that on one of their commercials, IIRC.
But, in any event, TurboTax is very easy and user-friendly, walking you right through everything. You just get all your documentation, forms, and receipts together and go to town, and they help you electronically file, which gets your refund issued much faster than printing and snail-mailing it.
You should definitely try it out...
Chase sent me a email saying their customers get to use TurboTax online for free - last few years I used TaxAct but they charge for electronic deposit - gonna lose them a lot of customers.<p.I doubt if there are any that don’t allow electronic filing/direct deposit - the question would be the fees.
i have used turbo tax for the last couple of years. If you haven’t changed much a lot is filled in for you. Your W2’s you enter your employer number and your id and it grabs the whole form online. You don’t have to send anything in the mail just keep for your records.
