Florida nurse calls ER ‘a cesspool of funky flu’ in viral video rant

Katherine Smith Lockler, of Milton, Florida, decided to air her frustration Saturday after finishing a 12-hour shift at the hospital, the Miami Herald reported. In the video, titled “After Work Thoughts,” she highlights the heightened risk of catching the flu this season and shares some sassy-toned tips to avoid getting yourself, and other people, sick.

To start, she chastised those who bring extra people to the hospital saying it’s “a cesspool of funky flu at the ER right now.” Don’t bring your kid’s sports team, don’t bring your "healthy children" and definitely don’t bring your newborn babies, Lockler said.

...

And definitely don’t go to the ER with a fever if you haven’t tried lowering it with the proper amount of Tylenol or Motrin.

“Please don’t come in and say ‘I have a fever and I had one Tylenol and it didn’t do nothing.’” she said. “Well, of course it didn’t!”

Four hundred to 600 milligrams is an okay dosage for adults, she said. “And if you’re a big dude in pain,” you can probably take a bit more.

And in dramatic effect, Lockler showed viewers the best way to contain your germs when you sneeze.

“Watch this,” she said as she pulled the camera back to fully show the demonstration. “I’m gonna teach y’all a magic trick, it’s amazing.”

While pretending to sneeze, Lockler showed how she sneezes into the crook of her arm, covering both her nose and mouth at the same time, she noted.

Sneezing into an arm can contain the splatter somewhat and keeps it off hands. But I’ve always wondered what the heck they are supposed to do about all the spit and mucous they just sneezed onto their clothing. If it’s ‘get a tissue and wipe it up’ why not just sneeze into the tissue in the first place?

That is SOP now in hospitals. Makes sense, too. Transmission by hand to doors, keyboards, etc. it a major issue, but crook of the arm...not so much.

I think if someone blows a snot on the crook of their elbow...there is a DIFFERENT kind of problem!

I sneeze into my shirt. It’s gross but not as gross as licking the door handle before using it to get the germs off.

You sneeze into the crook of your arm, you’re not sneezing into your hands; the idea is to not sneeze into your hands to prevent passing on the germs to the next person you touch.

And if you’re so sick that you’re spewing mucous instead of just a saliva spray, why didn’t you have a tissue? :-)

Crazy eyes.

My daughter's an ER nurse also. When she finishes a 12-hour graveyard shift, she kinda looks like that too. :-)

She is kind of cute, but...her eyes are artificially held open by caffeine, IMO!

he’s right...I have two friends in the hospital and visited them the other day. All the nursing staff wearing masks and gloves pretty much full time to try to not catch the Flu and/or pass it on to patients......I decided that i won’t be visiting them until they get out because when the medical staff is that concerned/careful it is an indication of their respect for this year’s Flu - kudos to them for their efforts though.

Its not about the person sneezing. The sneezer already has the virus. The key is NOT to spread it.

Unless you wipe your clothing on someone else...this protects as many people as possible.

Whatever. I’ve been a nurse for 21 years. The 2009/2010 flu season was way worse. And as far as the “get your flu shot” hype - most people who have gotten sick have been vaccinated.

Oh I completely understand the purpose of not sneezing into the hands so as to avoid transmitting cooties of all types. But, if you’re slinging snot when you sneeze, it’s probably just better to not be out of the house.

I just hate sneezing into my arm on my clothes and try to use tissues instead and squirt the hand sani.

Not table manners related but I detest it when I see someone sneeze or blow their nose and then they head over at church to shake my hand. Nuh-uh!

You have to have ‘attitude’ to be a hospital nurse. I have a relative in nursing care now, and I’ve been amazed at what these people go through to do their jobs, all the time keeping their equanimity.
