The parents are insane. Now their kid will likely die. I can’t believe they didn’t go for the shots.

My 23 year old daughter just received the rabies pre-vaccine, which is essentially the same as post-treatment; three shots in the arm at some intervals. She said it wasn’t bad.

She works as a wildlife biologist for the feds and traps and handles skunks and raccoons.

It was kind of pricey and her agency would not pay for it. I told her I would, get it. Turns out her insurance picked up a fair bit of it, she just had to get it under the guise of foreign travel.

If she is bitten, she still has to get two shots but has a very good chance of not developing the disease.

I hope.

Seriously, I'm saying a prayer for this child of really, really foolish parents.

Indeed.

Poor little boy.

A half grown raccoon walked right up to our dog and bit her on the face. Then it bit my daughter when she pulled the dog off. Thank God for the vaccine.

10% of bats found in homes have rabies.

Two of my children had the rabies vaccination experience after a bat was found in their cabins at camp. All the kids in the cabin had the shots. It's unusual for a bat to be inside and you have no idea if a bat bit a kid while they were sleeping because the bite can be as small as a mosquito bite. No way would I have opted out of the shots.

I'm regularly shaking sleeping bats out of the sailcover on my boat. Even dropped one into the cabin once and freaked my wife out.

I'm going to start being more careful.

I do not miss Greg’s show. The juxtaposition of Tyrus and Catherine is just hilarious even when they don’t say anything.

Now that boy, Ryker Roque, is being kept under anesthesia in an Orlando hospital in a desperate bid to save him from the deadliest virus there is: rabies.

Hyperbole much? Ebola, to my knowledge, is the deadliest virus known.

Back in the 70's we found a dead or sick bat in our yard. The other kids were daring each other to touch it but my older brother had told me, with ghoulish glee, what would happen to you if it bit you.

Needless to say I went crying to mom instead of touching it. (Cut me some slack people, I was maybe five?)

Older siblings. The bane of, and the protector of, the youngers.

IIRC they got shots. I got ice cream.

The difference is that Ebola infects and therefore kills a lot more people because of how it is transmitted - human to human, and that there is no vaccine for it yet, only palliative care, but the actual fatality rate is anywhere from around 50% to 90% depending the strain. But rabies without receiving the vaccination either pre or immediately post infection is nearly 100% fatal. But then rabies transmission between humans is extremely rare.

A person who is exposed and has never been vaccinated against rabies should get 4 doses of rabies vaccine - one dose right away, and additional doses on the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days. They should also get another shot called Rabies Immune Globulin at the same time as the first dose.

Cost will exceed 3,000.00

A local family was exposed and costs were over 10,000.00 each.

A dead bat was found at the State Envirothon a few years ago, and several participants who picked it up had to get shots. They can’t resist touching dead animals, no matter how many times you tell them!

Shot(s) wouldn’t have helped, so give him some slack.

Del-Immune, and Garlic (smashed in his mouth to release the Alicin to his blood stream) would be his best hope.

Del-immune saved millions from radiation sickness when Chernobyl blew its cork. It really works. Garlic releases Alicin when chewed, which is the only substance known to destroy viri without killing the host. It has a very hot taste but does no harm to living tissues.

Ebola is deadly to persons who are already in poor condition (which describes most of the population in places where Ebola is dominant)

You’re assuming that the shots saved his life, but there is no way of knowing that (and I think it is morelikely that there simply was no infection).

Fortunately he lived, so there is no point in persuing it further.

A local family was exposed and costs were over 10,000.00 each.

I was bitten in 2013 and 2015 by my little pet Chihuahua. I was asking the doctor if I should get shots the second time. He said, you have to remember, you are living in the Philippines, get the shots. So I did. He gave me tetanus too. All 4 shots in the arm. Total cost, for both incidents, was about the equivalent of $150 dollars.
