When I reported to Navy Boot Camp in 1985, they asked me if I wanted to be in a drill company (as a result of good ASVAB scores.)

I had no idea what a "drill company" was, so I asked, and they gave me a short explanation. It sounded interesting. In short, I volunteered, and I was placed on the crack rifle team. I wish I had a video of our performance, but it was a really special experience, to be a part of it.

Interestingly, we didnt use those cool rifles to learn--we actually started with a bunch of taped up M-1s, if i remember correctly.

The drill companies used to start the same week as Service Week for the regular companies. We already knew the marching a facing movements; they taught us how to spin and handle our rifles, and we spent afternoons marching up and down the grinders. If someone dropped their rifle, we had to start all over, from the beginning.

The pain in our forearms was excruciating, but we all had very strong arm strength! Crack rifle was one the most coveted spots to be part of, and i have some fond memories of that!

In short, I volunteered,...

You volunteered?!?! Don't you know you're not supposed to do that?

Just kidding. Sounds like you had an experience beyond the usual boot camp routine.

I confess...that was the first time I “volunteered” while in the military. It turned out pretty well for me!
