A Minnesota mom got the Christmas present of her dreams Friday when she was surprised by her soldier son at Mall of America.
The ruse had been in the works for months. "I just keep telling her that I'm not going to be home until February," Army Pfc. Tim Hofmann said moments before the surprise.
He said it was all his dad's idea, adding, "I don't know how she's going to react really."
Josephine Hofmann thought she was coming to Mall of America for a head to toe makeover and an overnight stay at Radisson Blu, because she's part of a military family. All of that did happen, but while being "interviewed" about the experience by a Mall of America spokesperson, her surprised her from behind.
"Oh!" she yelled in disbelief, covering her face with her hand while holding her son close. "Oh I cannot talk!" The family will now have a month to spend with Tim Hofmann before he heads back to the Army.
"Who wouldn't want to celebrate her doing a great job raising two great kids," Hofmann said.
Hofmann's mom, meanwhile, kept her comments brief. "I guess I could use this," she laughed, wiping away tears of joy with her sleeve.

Little Somalia is not a place I’d choose for a reunion.
Much safer place than Cedar-Riverside.
My son in law is in the real one. I would take him being in “Little Somalia” any day of the week.
It’s a matter of perspective I guess.
My daughter just confessed to me that this summer her friend’s dad let them wander around the Mall of America without an adult (girls are 14 & 15). Same dad wouldn’t let them out of his site at the St. Cloud mall last weekend. For now, the MOA isn’t terribly unsafe.
That's certainly a happier event at the Mall of America than THIS appalling one:
