Malaga Christmas Lights
Vanity ^ | Dec 22, 2017 | Oshkalaboomboom

We live in Spain and yesterday we decided to spend the night in Malaga, about an hour from our house, so we watch their Christmas light displays. Besides the usual electric Christmas trees

They have one large section of a neighborhood made up to look like a Cathedral. It's huge.

Unlike the USA, Spaniards aren't afraid to put religious symbols on public property. The inside of the street cathedral had "stained glass windows" with nativity scenes.

Even the traffic roundabouts have Nativity scenes in the middle. This is all through the town, which is why you can make a night of it.

Twice a night the Cathedral erupts in a display of lights and music. You can see what it's like here. My wife made a pretty good recording of it but the ending was cut off. This is a Youtube video.

Watch the show here

We hope you all have a safe and Merry Christmas.

Beautiful!

I spent a weekend at the nearby Kempinsky in 2000. Malaga is a wonderful visit.

When I first saw the headline, I thought Malaga had to do with combining MAGA with Bodega lights.

Beautiful!

Is it my imagination, or is there a Moorish influence in some of the decorative designs?

They combine Morrish and Christian throughout the province. They ruled this area for 700 years and you can still see their influence today, from the layout of the whitewashed villages to the steppes carved into the mountains for farming to the Alhambra, a UNESCO world heritage site about an hour in the other direction from our house.

If you want to combine Moorish history, Christian history and religious symbols on public property, here is a picture I took from our terrace. At the base of that rock is a bronze statue commemorating 15 August 755 when Umayyad Abd ar-Rahman I of Damascus, the founder of the Emirate of Cordoba, arrived from North Africa to establish his Moorish kingdom at that spot. The cross on the top of the rock is to commemorate the surrender and end of Moorish rule in 1489. Ferdinand and Isabella took over the Alhambra and it was there that they granted an audience to an explorer named Christopher Columbus. The rest is part of American history.

Very nice indeed.
My sister lives down coast below Alicante. She’s getting on in years now but an almost storybook town has provided a wonderful life.

I have been to many Western European countries, but not Spain. Christianity has been in decline there for 5 decades, Spain being an exception, and maybe Italy. It really saddens me to see what is happening. Socialist governments are their gods.
