There was a local animal refuge that had one that had been raised being treated well. Nice animal, actually. As with burros, the ones most people meet have been treated pretty mean, they aren’t inherently unpleasant. Just an anecdotal observation.

Probably "retrieved" them from the US. Or they wandered South on their own.
Just before the Civil War, the US Army was testing camels out West for the cavalry.
At the start of the war, the unit was recalled, sans mounts, so the camels were set loose.
Supposedly, there were camel sightings into 1890s.
