MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBS) – A Transportation Security Administration worker packed more than just a sandwich in his lunch bag while heading to work at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

The worker mistakenly packed a gun, which was found by officials as the worker passed through a security checkpoint screening before work, confirmed TSA spokesman Mike McCarthy on Tuesday.

“The firearm was detected on Friday at the security checkpoint when a TSA employee underwent screening at the beginning of their shift,” McCarthy said.

OT, but here goes...

"...a TSA employee underwent screening at the beginning of their shift,"

Gah! The plural pronoun "their" describing a singular employee. Thank you, feminism, for corrupting the language for us. "The use he, him, his, etc. is nowadays considered sexist. Using them, they, or their is a way to avoid making an assumption of gender as there is no gender explicit in these pronouns."

If we want to avoid making assumptions about gender, maybe we need to switch to "xi" as in "at the beginning of xi shift."

/grammar rant. Returning you to you normal TSA and guns posting.

Well if there’s no can opener around, what are you going to use, your teeth?

Yeah

We can do this all day long, never run out of material

In the aftermath of 9/11, who does the government populate the first line against aerial terrorism?

The suspects themselves along with marching orders to treat the victims as if they were the perps

It’s MAD

LOL

I recall holding a large can of peaches while a sailor employed the “can opener” (large machete type knife).

Some people must keep their guns in the refrigerator, next to the chipped ham.

Happens all the time. /s

THank you for the PSA rant. I mean the TSA rant.
But why didn’t they just use “her” or “him” as was accurate. Why no mention of gender in this article? Does that mean it was a man and they want to avoid slandering men?

If this person is an American, I applaud their decision.

Now, I need to know what kind of gun it is before I can give respect.

I like the old days when “mankind” meant all people. “Man” was dual-purpose, both gender-specific and non-specific. Then you could say “he” and cover both a man and a woman. “Miss” and “Mrs.” were nice, too. Women were accorded respect like that and men never got it.

Things were so much easier for centuries before everybody became all hissy over things like that.

Why not just say “...at the beginning of its shift...”?

Hard to believe a sailor didn't have a P38 with him.
Machete would be a poor runner up.

Oh wait, don’t return just yet. That one irks me too. The latest excuse [for using a plural] is that the language is deficient in providing an all-purpose possessive pronoun for just those occasions.

Maybe that’s because people are [supposed to be] either male or female? If something is an it, we use the word “its”.

The default masculine singular “his” is so offensive these days. It makes me appreciate him all the more. :)

TSA almost always misses weapons, but this time they became suspicious when the Swiss cheese had .38 cal. holes in it.

Was it packed between two slices of bread with a little mayo and mustard? He probably meant to grab the sliced bologna and got confused. Gun. Bologna.

Gah! The plural pronoun "their" describing a singular employee.

Concur. The wording is straight out of Ayn Rand's "Anthem", where the individual had been expunged. "Our name is Equality 7-2521".
