I was assaulted by a taxi driver; not sure what to do

Posted on 11/27/2017 4:38:10 AM PST by proud American in Canada

Hi,

I am a longtime FReeper and just needed to talk to someone. I will not post and run, but I must say, I am just getting into bed. I had to go to the hospital because I slipped on our hardwood stairs, and my head hit the wall.

I had a headache that would not quit, no matter how much ice I put on it. I even took a half of a tramadol that I got a couple of years after I fell on the ice in our rural Canadian driveway; nothing helped.

The hospital told me that the wait would be about three hours, so I told my husband to go home and get some sleep; by this time, it was the early morning. "I'll get a taxi," I told him.

Anyway, I called a cab and the guy asked me to sit in the front. He stopped on a sidestreet and started to kiss me, tongue and all. I had no idea where I was. He unzipped his pants and made me touch, well, you know. Then (I was wearing a dress) he put his hand into my underwear and inserted his filthy fingers into me.

I made him drop me off about a half of a kilometer from where I live; don't want him to know where my 18 year-old daughter or I live.

Anyway, I called the police; spend a lot of time writing out a statement and even had to give my clothes to them (my favorite dress! LOL!)

I walked through the snow in a pair of sandals, once I saw his taillights disappear. I walked into the house sobbing; my husband asked what was wrong. I wasn't sure if I should call the police, but my husband said, wouldn't you want to call if it were our daughter?

Anyway, I feel like I want to vomit. The police told me to go to the hospital to get checked out. I could not even hug my husband, I felt so dirty. At least I brushed my teeth and had a buttload :) of mouthwash.

I just wonder if he could have given me a disease with his taxi hands.

So either my husband or a good friend of mine will bring me to the hospital to get checked out; for what, I don't know. I just feel violated and dirty. He kept looking for parking spots on side streets and I was very scared.

Has anything like this happened to any of you? Thank G*d I wasn't raped, but I was afraid of that.

I would appreciate any advice. I can't stop crying. I will check in as often as possible but I must say I am just getting to sleep, so my responses may be delayed. I've never been so happy to see my Black Lab as earlier. :) She is a good, sweet girl; was a little freaked out by the police officer however. ;)

As a cab driver, he will be easy to identify...press charges and put the mofo in jail.

Let the police track the guy down, go back to the hospital for your ailment, and see if you feel like you need counseling or therapy after a few days.

#1: Consult an attorney admitted in your jurisdiction immediately. (S)he will guide you in your interactions with the police. Also, you probably have an excellent civil case against not only the taxi driver (not important, because he probably has no assets), but against the taxi company as well. There may be deep pockets at the company.

#2: Expect to have some psychological trauma from this. See an experienced counselor as soon as possible to help deal with it. The sooner you deal with it the better.

I’m sorry this happened. You did nothing to deserve it. Good luck.

Why are you telling us instead of filing an assault charge with the police?

Sorry for your ordeal but just another example of why it is ‘important’ to ALWAYS have a ‘travel companion’.

Dependent on the situation, the two things that must be at your ‘fingertips’ at all times is a pistol and/or a parachute.

You will never know when you need either but chances are if you ever do, there won’t be a second time.

Sorry, even if the person were to overpower you and take your gun away at least you had a chance - for a moment - of protecting yourself. Without it, you had no chance.

Here's the law in Canada...

Criminal Code (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-46)

Criminal Code [7176 KB]

Act current to 2017-11-06 and last amended on 2017-10-18.

Sexual assault

271 Everyone who commits a sexual assault is guilty of

(a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years or, if the complainant is under the age of 16 years, to imprisonment for a term of not more than 14 years and to a minimum punishment of imprisonment for a term of one year; or

(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction and is liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 18 months or, if the complainant is under the age of 16 years, to imprisonment for a term of not more than two years less a day and to a minimum punishment of imprisonment for a term of six months.

Sorry. See you did talk to the police. They should be able to pick this guy up based on the taxi pickup calls.

You didn’t do anything wrong. Please call your personal doctor or someone within the Canadian health system, that can provide you with a referral to a mental health counselor that works with rape victims. Seek out these types of supports. Work with the police to bring the culprit to justice. Think of the next woman. See if you can find out if there are other women who have been assaulted by the same man.

You did nothing wrong.

Agree 100% with the other posters. Press charges. You sound like you were compromised by your fall (you sound concussed) and the scum cab driver took advantage of that.

Heinous and shameful. Have him prosecuted with prejudice.

Sorry you went through such a horrible experience. You did the right thing going to the police. You don’t want this creep doing this to others.

Prayers for your physical and emotional healing.

It sounds like you did go to the police then?

Definitely press charges. You will save the next woman from being assaulted, maybe worse.

Important to get this criminal off the streets as well. Would not be a surprise that you were not his only victim. If he is not prosecuted there no doubt will be others.

I’ve had many freaky incidents in NYC cabs and once at the Jersey Shore. In future, sit as far away from the driver as possible and if worse comes to worse, get out of the cab - even if it is a high traffic area. Press charge against him, sue the taxi company if possible and seek therapeutic help if you’re that traumatized, ok?

Thus is obviously a tough time, but I’d suggest taking a self defense class. It will empower you with tactics against future situations like this and help reduce the feeling of being a powerless victim.

Half of self defense is situational awareness and constantly revising tactical plans in your own mind to defend yourself. A good self defense class will give you the physical techniques to use and the right mental attitude.

Sorry you went thru this. The scum cabbie is the problem and needs to be dealt with harshly. Hard to believe people like him think they can get away with these crimes. Hopefully the justice system will deal with this properly.

Honey, you WERE raped. Press charges immediately. I am so sorry for this horrible ordeal you are going through. Was your driver a member of the protected “religion “? If so, being in Canada, you might have to fight for conviction. It’s their “culture”, dontcha know.
Prayers up for you and your family.

Typical FR response! Because it is late at night, she’s a friend here, and needs some guidance which some of us are happy to give. Get lost!

I'm a man, so my comments are somewhat biased.

If it was my wife, I would want to have an opportunity to be part of her ordeal. I would want her to cry and ask to be held because she feels (__________________).

It would be very uncomfortable (and I think THIS is why a lot of marriages break up after a rape) if she moped around (or didn't) and any attempt I made to be the other part of the two becoming one (remember that one?) was refused.

Include your husband immediately and intimately ... we don't know what to do or say, but as hunter gatherers protectors, you are the most important thing in our lives and we need to be part of you
