Molly Ringwald Recalls Jeffrey Katzenberg Comment in Revealing Essay About Hollywood Harassment
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 10/17/2017 | Ashley Lee

Posted on 10/18/2017 9:39:00 AM PDT by LRoggy

In a statement to THR, Katzenberg said, "That Molly Ringwald had to read those words attributed to me and believe I said them is horrifying, mortifying and embarrassing to me." In an essay for The New Yorker, Molly Ringwald reflected on her own experiences with sexual harassment in Hollywood, including an explicit comment once made by Jeffrey Katzenberg.

"The head of a major studio — and, incidentally, someone who claims himself to be horrified by the Harvey allegations — was quoted as saying, 'I wouldn’t know [Molly Ringwald] if she sat on my face,'" she said of a Movieline article in the 1990s, which included a reported quote from Katzenberg at the end of a paragraph about the song "Molly" by alternative rock group Sponge (included below). "Maybe he was misquoted. If he ever sent a note of apology, it must have gotten lost in the mail."

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Katzenberg said, "That Molly Ringwald had to read those words attributed to me and believe I said them is horrifying, mortifying and embarrassing to me. Anyone who knows me now or back then knows I do not use language like that as a matter of course, or tolerate it. Ms. Ringwald, 22 years too late, I am deeply, deeply sorry.”

Passed around all over . . . Hollywood, Wall Street, Washington DC, Rock Bands, Pro Athletes (I wonder how many of our sanctimonious knee-takers were perfectly willing to have women take a knee for them?), News Editors, College Professors (anyone else remember an "A" for a Lay?), etc. And so many of these groups try to make sure the REST of us live according to their dictates!

ALL of those pukes taking a knee are guilty of some sort of thing that if found out would make you squirm.

Molly Ringwald always struck me as being one of the smarter and more likable of Brat Pack members.

I hope she didn’t get abused by any of the Hollywood a-holes, but that’s probably unrealistic.

Every time someone mentions the GOP “war on women” we need to cram this down their throats.

I saw her on Broadway several years ago in a revival of Cabaret. Her performance was actually kind of disappointing.

Off topic I have wondered whatever happened to Molly Ringwald, after she rose to prominence in the John Hughes teenage movies of the ‘80s.

On topic, it sounds as if numerous girls and women in Hollywood have been subjected to bad behavior. Have some kept quiet all these years, thinking there is a price to be paid for Fame and fortune?

Well, to be honest, I don't think her acting skills were that terrific. I mean, she's an actress, she can act, has talent, no question about that. But she's not in the first rank of actresses.

Which is actually good, because the best actresses (I'm thinking of Laura Dern, perhaps, or Jodi Foster) are often whack jobs.

I think Molly Ringwald was at her best when she was basically playing herself. That is, playing the part of a teenager who was very much a copy of Molly Ringwald.

That's not unusual in Hollywood. Lots of actors get famous and make a lot of money playing themselves.

Another one in that mold is Jennifer Gray. Too bad about the nose thing.

Sixteen Candles was a fun film and Molly Ringwald was incredibly cute in it.But one needs only remember two things about Hollywood to understand the zeitgeist of the town:

1) Hollywood,*to this day*,lionizes Roman Polanski

2) The tears shed by Hollywood's denizens at the death of Heffner.

MW has been in a couple of TV series in recent years, ‘Raising Expectations’ and ‘Secret Life of an American Teenager’. She played mom to the teenage star in both.

She made some naughty movies in France after she kind of disappeared in the ‘80s.

‘I wouldn’t know [Molly Ringwald] if she sat on my face,’

What am I missing here. Where is the sexual harassment? Katzenburg was talking to someone else about Ringwald.

Why would she consider this sexual harassment if she was not even in the same room when he said this about her.

Nobody else threw a party or open house like Hef. They knew they could get laid and unlike a swingers bar, they dudn’t have to pay to get in.

If that's an exact quote all I can say is that I'd never saying anything like that about a woman."If I tripped over her"...yes,I'd say that. But what he said suggests a deeply depraved guy.

Arguably the single most ill-advised piece of plastic surgery ever. And that's saying something.

It's nice to see her and Winona Ryder revive their careers this way.

She opened her trap about something during a past election cycle, a GWB one, maybe, and that was it for me.

I lumped her in with that handful of actresses the went on Oprah or The View and said "A vote for Bush is a vote for rape".

I know! I get that is was a crass thing to say but, I think we have all said some off-color (am I allowed to say that?) remarks without intending any harm. The PC police are really going off the rails. How many times did anyone hear the old “moustache rides” offer when in a bar or club?

Really?

"I never talked about these things publicly because, as a woman, it has always felt like I may as well have been talking about the weather. Stories like these have never been taken seriously. Women are shamed, told they are uptight, nasty, bitter, can’t take a joke, are too sensitive. And the men? Well, if they’re lucky, they might get elected president."

Never ... and I grew up in New Orleans. I guess some people talk trashier than others.
