The GG1s were developed from the New Haven Railroad’s
EP-3, which was a box-cab electric, but had the same wheel arrangement. The external appearance was done by Raymond Loewy, who did the previous and identically-styled
P5A, and one-offs
R1 and
DD2, as well as steamers like the T1.
