DirecTV reportedly giving refunds on Sunday Ticket over protests

DirecTV is allowing customers to get refunds when they cancel their Sunday Ticket package if they cite players protesting during the national anthem as the reason for ending the service, Joe Flint of The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to The Journal, different DirecTV representatives provided contradicting answers when asked if refunds would be provided, but customers who contacted The Journal said they were getting at least some refunds. One DirecTV representative told The Journal that only customers with specific plans could get refunds, another said customers could get prorated refunds for the remainder of the season, a third said full refunds were available while a fourth said no refunds were being offered.

Good. I was thinking that it’ll actually be worse for the NFL next year if they don’t do something because so many of the tickets already sold are probably not refundable, so most people will go ahead and go to the games.

Some attorney would love to take a class action against the NFL and all 32 teams as co-defendants if they refuse a refund.

It has been reported on Fox shows of Dobbs, Carlson and Hannity. Also, subscribers to the alternative Red Zone on other cable carriers is also doing the same.

There is a “black market” if you are desperate enough to want to watch the games. Just sayin’.

You mean about the tickets? Seems like most tickets say “Non-refundable” on them. If I had a ticket and I could get a refund I sure as hell would.

If the NFL had any guts, they would offer this option to season ticket holders throughout the league.

I’m not holding my breath.

There are 3 pieces to this business model. First, for this year...most all teams have sold their tickets. The marginal teams probably have 100,000 tickets for home-games left to be sold. Most will discount them enough (30-percent probably) to sell them. For play-off games? Same deal....discounted probably. But as you get to spring of 2018 and the ticket sales start up...there, you will see heavily discounted tickets (30-to-40 percent off, I would imagine).

On fan gear...three months before Xmas? The sport shops are going to take a major hit and be left with stock. You can figure a 50-percent cut on orders after you get to the end of this season.

Then you come to the TV contracts. Normally 3.5 billion would flow to the NFL. I’ll take a wag at 2.5 billion being the sum for this season sent over. The bigger issue is that there are always contract negotiations going on and the networks will low-ball the number now on future talks. I would take a guess that the NFL and the unions will be looking at a loss of 25-percent on the next big contract signed.

But ask yourself this...can you survive through 2018, 2019, and 2020 season like this? If Trump runs in 2020 and wins? Can you survive through to 2024, as a NFL team? Salary cuts coming? NFL players strike on the cuts? For players, they might want to polish their resumes and prepare for the real world.

“. . . because so many of the tickets already sold are probably not refundable, so most people will go ahead and go to the games.”

If someone has a ticket and can't get a refund the only logical response is to burn the ticket.

Whether you attend the game or not, the money for the ticket is lost (if you can't get a refund.) That is sunk cost.

Of course, you could try to give the ticket to someone that doesn't care about the NFL’s hideous policies. But that's like giving a child a loaded weapon. Not something any caring adult would do.

Again, burn the ticket and save yourself additional cost of going to the game, paying parking, paying for water, paying for a program, etc.

Destroying the ticket and boycotting the NFL is part of the continuing high cost of being an American.

I don’t see that happening, even though they allowed the thugs to cause this mess, they will likely take no responsibility for it. I think they have already shown how important fans are to them.

Just as so many businesses decided customer service was not necessary, trained personnel was not needed- then could not figure out why customers stopped shopping with them, I don’t expect the NFL to be different. When they no longer have a customer base, it will be too late just as it has been for so many retail companies in the last several years.

I would give it to a crack head right before the game so other could enjoy his stench inside the game.

Gonna cancel ours (NFL) this week. If DTV wants to play hardball then we’ll suck it up and cancel the whole damn thing.

Already have Hulu, Netflix and Amazon, don’t watch broadcast TV so really they can all KMA. And I’m prepared to suckup $200 or so to cancel this CRAP!!

I know a lot of people canceling, my husband ditched football last year because he had already had enough then.

We rarely watch TV at all, we had a big channel package to get news channels and sports but we no longer watch TV news or football so don’t need the TV package. I was going to cancel all our TV but we get ours through our local telephone coop as part of a bundle and the coop is canceling TV services (because so many have dropped TV it is no longer worth the trouble to them to provide it) November 1st so I will not bother canceling it. No penalties if they drop TV from my package. If I do it possibly some penalty.

Nope, no desire to watch. We are just done with football, and never were fans of other sports other than rodeo. Rodeo has always been hit and miss on TV and now we can find out results and watch video in nearly real time on Facebook with just people we know posting.

I used to watch History Channel, and some similar but they all went to crazy shows instead of what I liked. I also liked things like This Old House, but those channels became real estate shows and house flippers. TV has just gone in the toilet really. I don’t even remember the last show I looked forward to watching.
