Local singer Rico Lavelle belted out “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Detroit Lions’ home game against the Atlanta Falcons at Ford Field on Sunday, then paused for a moment between the final words “home of the” and “brave.”
In that second, he dropped to his right knee and raised his left hand in a fist — reminiscent of the defiant black-power salute of US Olympic track stars John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Games to protest racism.
After belting out the final note, Lavelle lowered his lead and lifted his right hand — with the microphone — in a fist.

...and Detroit lost the game as painfully as possible for a regular season game. Lions scored the game winning TD, but the refs decided to take a knee on that TD and ran off the last 8 seconds by rule.
