When Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, Republican New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller turned to Rep. Charles Goodell of Jamestown to fill his seat. Goodell was the father of newly embattled NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and would serve in that position for less than two years. In 1970, Charlie Goodell was ousted, after his sudden, bold and vocal embrace of the anti-war movement put him at odds with the Nixon Administration. And Nixon helped make sure Goodell didn't win a full term.
Grantland's Bryan Curtis wrote up the full story in 2013, including interviews with people that were involved at the time. It outlines how the senior Goodell transformed from a sharp, committed Republican congressman -- "kind of the Paul Ryan of the time," one Times reporter told Curtis -- into a sideburn-wearing, Jane Fonda-befriending senator from the Empire State. We've excerpted part of the Post's coverage of that change to illustrate a remarkable time period and a remarkable -- and brief -- political career.

I am posting this article in answer to the question "When is the NFL going to learn not to offend its customers with its left-wing politics?"
The answer to that question seems to be: NEVER!
Left-wing politics seem to be part of Roger Goodell's DNA.
The NFL team owners are the people who put Roger Goodell in his job as NFL commissioner. If they were unhappy with his job performance, Roger Goodell would be out of job. Since he is still employed, it seems reasonable to conclude that the NFL owners as a group are happy with his job performance.
Tell that to Jerry Jones. Jones is on his own jihad against Goodell and Kraft sits on the ownership committee. Jones has worked his influence to be forcing the board to recognize they need to rid themselves of Goodell.
The sooner that Goodell is GONE, the better.
Goodell is a leftist punk. He needs to go if the NFL wants to save itself. Goodell threated Texas because they wanted to pass the law to keep the male creeps out of girls bathrooms and showers.
Pete Rozelle was from the University of San Francisco and PR guy for the great 1951 team that refused to go to the bowl games because they would not be allowed to take their black running back. Great team, great men - check out the 1951 USF Dons 4 Hall of Famers

He’s not newly embattled. He’s been embattled nearly the whole time he’s been comissioner. This isn’t nearly the worse it’s been fir him. Whether, he is covering up fir Robert Kraft, or Ray Rice.

I am no fan of Jones and indifferent to Kraft, but when the NFL told the Cowboys they could not honor the police murdered by the scum BLM with patches, but Kaeper-Dick could do his antics,it made my blood boil. The NFL also went full retard on “Inflategate” and was not too pleased with Brady and Kraft being friendly with Trump. Goodell is rapidly destroying the game of professional football. It’s not the biggest American problem,but it reveals deeper problems with our country being shredded by leftists and radicals.
I didn’t realize his father was Charles Goodell. That election in 1970 was amazing for me. I headed up the Buckley for Senator group at Cornell, which took some grit in itself - during the Vietnam War protests, which were raging at the school.
Buckley won as the Conservative Party candidate when Goodell (R) and Richard Ottinger (D) split the liberal vote.
Only the Reagan election in 1980 topped that.
That's what made me tune out. Kaepernick's antic's infuriated me but my team wasn't participating so I didn't even think of boycotting but when RG said that Dallas couldn't honor the murdered Dallas cops after giving Kaepernick his imprimatur I'd had enough. Don't think I'll ever be back.
He should lose his seat because Condi Rice wants it.
Roger Goodell’s reaction against Trump this weekend was instinctive. It was reminiscent of his father’s, Senator Goddell, stand against Nixon and the Vietnam War.
It does not appear that Roger Goodell sat down and thought about the effects of his stand on the NFL, ticket sales, TV ratings, and future tax-payer supported new stadiums.
It apparently never occurred to him that it may not be a good business practice to insult patriotic Americans, when Americans are his business’s customer base.
It is up to the NFL team owners to take action if they do not like the way he is running the league.
