Terms such as ahoy, aye,aye and avast are still used in our Navy. "Ahoy" (spelled ahoj) means "hi" in Czech, a language spoken in a country that has no seacoast.

No, the boat would respond “passing” if bound from another ship. If a gig from USS Sterett was head for the requesters position, the boat coxswain would respond “Sterett”. If it was an Admirals barge the coxswain would answer “BATDIVTWO”
That way the ship’s QD would know what honors to render. That is how is done in our Navy.
