Poor diet is a factor in one in five deaths, global disease study reveals

Study compiling data from every country finds people are living longer but millions are eating wrong foods for their health.

Poor diet is a factor in one in five deaths around the world, according to the most comprehensive study ever carried out on the subject.

Millions of people are eating the wrong sorts of food for good health. Eating a diet that is low in whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds and fish oils and high in salt raises the risk of an early death, according to the huge and ongoing study Global Burden of Disease.

The study, based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, compiles data from every country in the world and makes informed estimates where there are gaps. Five papers on life expectancy and the causes and risk factors of death and ill health have been published by the Lancet medical journal.

Diet is the second highest risk factor for early death after smoking. Other high risks are high blood glucose which can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, high body mass index (BMI) which is a measure of obesity, and high total cholesterol. All of these can be related to eating the wrong foods, although there are also other causes.

Sugary drinks are harmful to health but eating a lot of red meat, the study finds, is not as big a risk to health as failing to eat whole grains. “We need to look really carefully at what are the healthy compounds in diets that provide protection,” he said.

A lot of people on this forum are not eating whole grains because they believe that "carbs" are bad. This is putting their health at risk. I have had several friends who have literally put themselves in an early grave after putting their faith in "high protein low carb" diets. Young people can power through this type of stupidity, but us older folks need to stick with common sense and moderation in all things when it comes to diet and exercise.

I think I’m ok, I use whole grain bread when I eat my bologna sandwiches.

High fat, low carb, moderate protein. I believe that high protein is a bad thing, for the sedentary types.

This is the first scare, death, and fear journalism piece that didn’t apply global warming as the root cause article in years. They are slipping.

Next thing they’re gonna tell us is that wheels are round....just eat nutrient dense foods in amounts that cover your nutritional needs(not desires)...and exercise moderately and often.count the calories...drive your blood sugar..weight...cholesterol down...cut your table salt...equiv to about one teaspoonful per day..unless high physical activity..so many chronic disorders due to diabetes..obesity..poor nutrition...old news...at least not fake news

That is a very good point. When I was young I rode my bicycle approximately 300 miles a week for most of the year. I needed to eat a lot to get through rides that were typically 40 to 100 miles. My dietary needs were a lot different than they are these days.

My whole grain carbs are of plenty. They pour right from the bottle.

That type of “food” processing may cancel out the health benefits of the grain and depending on the quantity... might have it’s own health risks.

71% of people aged between 17 and 24 in this country cannot currently qualify for military service. This is largely because of obesity and lack of physical condition. And you think that it is stupid to speculate that they have poor diets?

Poor diet occurs for multiple reasons. Some deliberately, some not so.

The lack of proper amounts of vitamins, minerals and other buidling blocks for the body to maintain and repair and heal itself is the underpinning of all health problems that are not caused by particular accidents/trauma or inherited genetic conditions.

Yes, it’s definitively stupid to speculate that obesity is due to poor diet while the elephants in the room are over-eating, lack of physical activities, smoking, binge drinking... But it’s so political correct to put the fault on others (the industrial complex, the processed food whatever-it-means, the conspiracy du jour...) instead of implying any personal responsibility.

You want an obese to get good health ? Tell him to eat exactly the same “junk food” but only half in quantity and exercise.

All of these studies should be taken with an entire salt lick.

Choosing the right parents is the most important factor in a long healthy life.

Genes are the most important factor in good health.

I had a neighbor growing up that lived to within a few months of his 100th birthday. He out lived his wife by 25 years and outlived both of his sons.

He lost a leg working for a railroad in his thirties. Smoked most of his life (right up to his last few weeks of life). Drank beer every day that I knew him. Never ate any whole grains that I ever saw.

Being that he had an artificial leg he got very little exercise. He spent most of his time watching TV or sitting on the porch in good weather and reading the paper.

He had pretty good health while breaking all the rules. Sure you can maximize your chances by doing all these things they tell you to do; your genes are far more important.

40 years of caloric restriction research proves life extension in almost every species. Lower rates of intracellular/mitochondrial iron loading (accelerated aging)is achieved by lowering the excessive presence of glucose/insulin. The higher rates of insulin elevate the rate of iron loading and aging. Higher carbohydrate consumption increases your ambient insulin levels.
