Red Sox Stole Signs Electronically From Yankees, Other Teams

Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed Tuesday that the Boston Red Sox used electronic communication from the dugout to steal opponents' signs and relay them to Boston players during games.

Baseball's investigation of the Red Sox is ongoing, Manfred said from Fenway Park ahead of Boston's game against Toronto, but he expects it will be completed before the end of the regular season.

News of the investigation was first reported by the New York Times.

The Red Sox were accused of stealing signs electronically against the Yankees at Fenway Park. Adam Glanzman/Getty Images Major League Baseball does not have a policy against sign stealing, per se, Manfred said. The issue is the use of a electronic device in the dugout, which is against league rules.

"We actually do not have a rule against sign-stealing," Manfred said. "It has been a part of the game for a very, very long time. To the extent that there was a violation of the rule here, it was a violation by one or the other [team] that involved the use of electronic equipment. It's the electronic equipment that creates the violation. I think the rule against electronic equipment has a number of policy reasons behind it, but one of them is we don't want to escalate attempts to figure out what a pitcher is going to throw by introducing electronics into that mix.

People have been stealing signs in baseball for over 150 years. Sounds like the Red Sox need to encrypt their communications.

what does this matter?

teams won’t stop anyway, so why bother?

here’s an interesting concept, have players versed enough in the basics to know what to do without any signs or other signals.

manufacture runs the old way. Good, solid ball-playing.

Exactly. It’s not even against the rules.

I remember in his book, Ty Cobb said Detroit used to have a guy hidden in center field with binoculars. He would read the catcher’s signals and then somehow send it to the first base coach. He would then relay it to the batter.

Ordinarily I’d care but I’d LOVE to see John Henry get in trouble over this.

Well, there’s even the story that the New York Giants did this in 1951 concerning their dramatic win over the Brooklyn Dodgers for the National League pennant (Bobby Thompson’s shot heard around the world).

no electronics are allowed in the dugout. That’s the rules. This is premeditated cheating.

Ty Cobb was one of the best players ever ... also the dirtiest and meanest!

I believe the use of electronic equipment in the dugout is against the rules.

Didn’t help the Sucks when the Yanks took three out of four from them in the Bronx this past weekend. Guess they only cheat at home.
