“No one can fully explain why.”

Except that Christian movies like “War Room” are made for a measly $13m and gross (so far) $67m, or “Miracles from Heaven” (not nearly as overtly preachy & featuring Jennifer Garner (made for about $30m and grossing about $65m so far) show that in fact there are HUGE profits to be made . . . but you have to speak to the audience.

I and two conservative Hollywood colleagues have been unable, however, to get funding for several G-rated, Disney-type, fun and funny pictures from anyone. All in the $2m range. Should return 10:1. No one is interested.

What did you think?

I really had high hopes for that one and was extremely disappointed.

Follywood, Macy’s, NFL/ESPN and Target going down and down.

Is there a common thread/reason for these downward trends?

It’s so ridiculous. So sick of 120 pound women beating up SEALs.

There are literally tons of classic American books, novels, classic cartoons, and short stories that can easily be made into movies. Also, Amazon has a thing where amateur writers can write their novels electronically.

Why are conservative filmmakers not going after this huge, untapped market?

This is the thing that irritates me about conservatives. When it comes to the arts, conservatives would rather stand on the sideline and complain rather than take the initiative and chase after this. You don't need $100 million to make a movie. Today's technology (even shooting films using a Mac or Iphone) enables one to make movies for pennies on the dollar.

This is primary the reason why Hollywood went bust this summer. They pissed off the heartland with their endless support of Hillary and bashing Trump, and they're making the same crap that was made for years and years.

I can’t bear politically correct “entertainment.”

And it's not only the political correctness inside the movie - the actors and directors simply can't not spew their PC crap anytime someone shoves a microphone in their face.

Hey Liam, yeah you Mr. Neeson, you had to go and run your mouth about stupid Americans and their assault rifles, didn't you? Well, you know what? You are now dead to me. I will never watch any movie you are in ever again. Dumb cuck.

Last one I went to was Titanic, in 92 I think.

And that only because I did a paper on it in high school and the movie was allegedly very accurate (and Kate Winslet looks like a real woman, not a starved Barbie)

Correct. I think you can even go further. I believe there is again a place for the movie “event.” Studios would absolutely NOT release it to DVD or HBO or any other medium. ONLY the theater. It would stay, as the Disney movies used to, for weeks. Then be gone for up to a year.

I’m under no illusions that this would be easy, or that the first few pictures done like this would take a bath. But culture CAN be retrained. Once it’s clear you can ONLY see “The Avengers Part 12” or whatever it is in the theater, NOW, you will again fill up theaters.

And agree on the mumbling. Viggo Mortenson did “Vanishing Point” for a friend of mine (actually a Freeper) who directed him. He said almost every line had to be redone, because Mortenson mumbled so much.

Profits drive the business but advancing the progressive cause still comes first. But I'm sure you already knew that.

LS,

Given your interests, I thought I’d mention something that occurred to me a couple of days ago, namely if the movie house chains want to survive, they’re going to have to get into the production business themselves just like cable, Netflix, Amazon, et. al. have done, and for the same reasons, namely its the only way to produce high-quality entertainment that intelligent people want to watch.

Netflix, etc. have figured out that crap movies don’t appeal any better when streamed second hand than they did when they first bombed on the big screen.

If Netflix can do it, there’s no reason AMC can’t do it IF (and that’s a BIG “if”) AMC management is clever. Can you imagine the money AMC would have made if they had produced Game of Thrones exactly like it is currently made and showed it as a serial exclusively in their own theaters? Say, one new episode every week, with old episodes constantly playing for latecomers to the series?

If they are actually going to survive, the theater chains are going to have to team up directly with other, non-Hollywood production companies. If they don’t do that and instead keep their wagon hitched exclusively to the big Hollywood studios, they’re going to go the way of the dodo bird.

Any business, entertainer or pro sports group that is dumb enough to PO and turn off the 62+ million Trump voters, might just out of business and suffer a miserable end game.

Hey Follywood, turn off/muzzle your vocal and low talent faux actors, who hate America, Trump and our religion. Then produce some good movies which don’t run down America and our religion.

We might come back and visit.

Hey, Follywood and ABCNNBCBS wait until cable cutting really hits its stride. You “ain’t” really felt misery until that really happens with millions of Americans, each week cutting their cables.

Too much empty sand. Would have benefitted from some creative CGI to show some chaos on the beach. I have a picture in my mind’s eye of B&W aerial footage traversing the beach with a chaotic mass of humanity and equipment below. Not sure if it is from some archival footage or perhaps an earlier movie.......or maybe from my time in the 60s.

I found the way the story was told, one week, one day, one hour to be interesting and unique. However, I had a warning about that from FReepers who had already seen it so I wasn’t confused.
