I think what is key is that our family always looked for ways to explain how the government, politicians, laws affected our lives to kids—as well as how our Constitution protected us. Perhaps some parents don’t bring politics down to their kids’ level.
I had my kids at various political rallies/functions at a very early age—so they were politically aware, had Rush on in the car and at home (when he was the only conservative on talk radio), Fox when they were actually conservative.
I wonder if some parents did not think their kids could understand?
LOL my millennial daughter struggles with some of the “in the weeds” political issues swirling around today, and she is somewhat shy; however, she actually called Rush last Spring and was bumped up to his first call LOL Boy was she nervous! She did well :)
...A very liberating experience for her to do that and explain her position :) She is now ready to spread her wings and fly solo as a conservative ;)

It's almost impossible to do that now ( re the news ) for little kids ( some topics shouldn't even be talked about in front of tweens, nowadays ) but there are still things one CAN and should do!
Sadly, many parents, even supposed conservative ones, have abrogated their parental responsibilities! :-(
You have to start the indoctrination/education as soon as possible! And yes, you can break it down to very simple language for the wee ones. They DO understand right from wrong and that's where to start. Also, little dribs and drabs of factual history stories work really well! History IS exciting and all kiddos love a good story.
When I was little, when Disney stuff was still good, there were several GREAT historical cartoons; Johnny Appleseed is still one of my favorites! And they're on YouTube , so it's not difficult to show them to little kiddos. And from there, it's easy to get a talk started about all kinds of different things.
