A significant number of Black, Hispanic and non-racist white veterans vote. Minority veterans are more highly respected in their communities than white veterans in a white community. That means the typical minority veteran influences more votes than the typical white veteran.

I did not realize that minority veterans are more respected than white. Of course, there are many more white veterans, so I guess that would be true. But there are also many white liberals that hate the US, so naturally they would hate the military.
