This would be unknown, except for the story re-told in the movie, “Jaws”.

I heard the other day. There are 19 survivors left.

Thank you all, for what you did.

Thanking you, just doesn’t seem to be enough.

"So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

Wow! Didn’t know anyone was looking for it. Allen has a nice warplane collection just north of Seattle that’s open to the public. Worth a visit. Quite a few WWII era planes.

The Navy really screwed up not knowing the ship was missing for days. Tragic.

Yes, the character played by Robert Shaw was a survivor and he told the story while they were drinking one night on the boat.

The mission to deliver the first atomic bomb was so secret that after it was completed the navy lost track of the ship.

There was another cruiser that the Japs sank early in the war in the Dutch East Indies. It was nicked a ghost ship because the Japs had claimed to have sunk so many times and it kept returning to the fight. The survivors wound up building a railroad in Burma. when they were freed and returned home they were totally forgotten.

Thanks to John Milieus who wrote the scene (and created Dirty Harry)
