When celebrating birthdays, blowing out a cake full of candles and singing a public domain song is a time-honored tradition. Yet has it ever occurred to you that this ritual means that the birthday celebrant is just blasting spit over the candles and the top layer of the cake? Well, now it has.
The Journal of Food Research in Canada recently published a study, which we learned about from The Atlantic, that will make every celebration that you’re part of seem just a little more gross. Logically, some saliva must end up on cakes when you blow out candles, but the daughter of Paul Dawson, a professor at Clemson University, wondered how much more.

I blow my birthday cakes out with sneezes so I don’t think this applies to me.
Growing up I never would eat cake that had the candles blown out.
Still won’t.

That’s funny... In my family we blow out birthday cake candles by clapping ones’ hands over the cake. That’s the way we’ve done it for the last (almost) half century.
Try it, it works.
Of course we all knew this all along.

That leaves little bits of dried skin and sweat on the cake. Yuck. Personally, I use a stainless steel and viton bellows that's been autoclaved.

Seriously, blowing out candles and spit. You have got to be kidding. I draw the line when someone lets pets have a place at the table.

Thanks I needed to hear that.. Not.. I still will eat the cake unless a dog slobbers all over it..
But if a guy is that squirmish about germs and his mouth he’s going to miss out on a whole lot of fun things in life.
