Anthem protests led poll of reasons viewers tuned out [NFL] [ed]

National anthem protests were the top reason that NFL fans watched fewer games last season, according to a new survey released by J.D. Power.

The pollster said it asked more than 9,200 people who attended either one football, basketball or hockey game whether they tuned into fewer games and why. Twenty-six percent of those who watched fewer games last season said that national anthem protests, some of which were led by Colin Kaepernick, were the reason.

After that, 24 percent of those surveyed who said they watched fewer games said they did so either because of the league's off-the-field image issues with domestic violence or with game delays, including penalties.

The NFL can really hit it out of the park if they have a “gay day,” like the MLB did.

Did the MLB hand out those little bats and Vaseline?

I got tired of watching the entitled showboating Obama supporters of the NFL on the field. Most of them have no class at all. There are a few exceptions but overall the NFL is no longer a sport for all races.

I never cared about krapnick much; I, and many of my friends, have tuned out the NFL because it’s not worth watching over 3 hours to see 60 minutes of game.

Too many replays, too many sissy penalties, too many jackass dances, not enough (good) football.

Oh, and lose the super sticky gloves.

Were you aware that MLB had a "gay day"?

Personally, I have spent pretty much every Sunday from Sept.-January of my adult life glued to NFL games. Last year I watched only a quarter of the number of games I would have watched (we have the NFL package so we watch a lot). It was also the first year we didn’t attend any live games. Between the anthem protests and the number of gays portrayed in commercials I am just not interested anymore.

They don’t have heros anymore. It’s simple as that. Who wants to watch a bunch of drug sniffing, wife beating, cheaters? Add in lack of patriotism and it seals the deal.

What kid wants to grow up and be like those losers?

Add to that the prohibitions of horsecollars, “targeting,” the announcers’ constantly telling all about what we just saw, and the over and over again commercial breaks, and god-awful replay delays, and you have a very unwatchable sport.

That’s why I “DVR” the games and then fast forward through all the constant delays. As soon as I hear the ref’s whistle, I fast forward counting to 12, and they’re lined up again. Zoom through the 15 minute half-times, and you might have a complete game done in, guess what, an hour.

Did ESPN finally discover journalism? Even if they are the only ones surprised, it’s nice that they noticed.

I don’t believe polls anymore. Besides, the national anthem isn’t typically broadcast on NFL games. Strange.

Football is in trouble.

Just like boxing used to be huge, and slowly slid away, the brain damage publicity will choke off the pipeline, and then the game.

I boycotted last year because the NFL allowed and encouraged it.

I voted by turning the channel.

Nice to see I wasn’t alone.

Kaepernick non withstanding, what really did it for me was when the three Rams players (don’t remember who they were, it’s not really important) when upon introduction raised there hands up to mimic the Ferguson incident. Off went the TV and out the door I went.

Ya, why does it take 3 1/2 hours to play a football game nowadays? Years ago it took 3 hours or slightly less.

Part of the reason is constant interruptions in play, due to replay challenges. And part of it is the timing of commercials.

It is a natural break in the action when they go to commercials after a scoring play. However, they have their commercial break, come back for the kickoff, then go to another commercial break. They didn’t do that years ago.

Clearly they have added more and more commercials to the broadcasts, which can be counter productive. I don’t watch as much as I used to, and part of it is how long the games are stretched out.

I am also annoyed at the girl sideline reporters. These girls weren’t there on broadcasts years ago. They add nothing to the broadcast.

Same here. What throws me off are the no huddle offenses so that I have to back up the DVR to catch the beginning of the play. Occasionally, if there's really a spectacular run, pass or defensive play, I'll watch the replay, but otherwise, I can do the game in just over an hour.

Time otherwise spent watching football, is better spent hanging out with family and friends.

Pro football has turned into a sport where inbred gorillas draw 7-figure salaries for standing around either scratching their balls or strutting around like peacocks. I don’t need to watch either of those things.
