Seems ecigs are a better choice than cigs and neither is better than no cigs of any kind.

If you smoke, you’d be better off vaping (assuming it doesn’t explode).
If you vape, you’d be better off quitting entirely.

That is great! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Bravo to all who have either traded cigarettes for vaping or gone the next step and used vaping to end the nicotine addiction completely!

From that link...

Professor Glantz, Professor

Professor Glantz, Professor Siegel has responded to your e-cig nicotine inhaler comparison in part as follows.  I'd be very much interested in hearing your response. Please see his blog for his full response.  Thanks.

------------------------

The analysis is essentially comparing the amount of these chemicals produced by one cartridge of an electronic cigarette versus one cartridge of a nicotine
inhaler.

Sound like a fair comparison? Comparing apples to apples?

Well, no.

While 150 puffs is the approximate dose of vapor that an electronic cigarette user inhales per day (about one cartridge - depending on the brand), a typical nicotine inhaler user will go through about 16 cartridges per day. Obviously, these figures vary depending on the individual, but it is not unreasonable to assume that a typical vaper would take 150 puffs per day, while a nicotine inhaler user might use 16 cartridges per day.

Since what we are interested in is the difference in toxicant exposure, we must take the number of cartridges used per day into our analysis.  What we want to estimate and compare is the total daily exposure to these various chemicals.

So here is Dr. Glantz's table reproduced correctly to represent a comparison of daily carcinogen intake rather than intake from one cartridge:

                              ecig      inhaler    ratio
Formaldehyde     28.2      32.0        0.9
Acetaldehyde         7.4      17.6        0.4

Acrolein                 11.5      ND
o-methylbenzyne   3.9      11.2        0.3
Toluene                   0.8      ND
p,m-xylene              0.1      ND
NNN                         1.5      ND
NNK                          6.6      ND
Cadmium              0.09        0.48     0.2
Nickel                     0.19        3.0       0.1
Lead                       0.09        0.64     0.1

ND=not detected

You can see that in contrast to what Dr. Glantz reported, the estimated daily exposure to six carcinogens is substantially higher for use of a nicotine inhaler compared to use of electronic cigarettes, based on the very same data that he believes is valid. As you can see, this changes the conclusion quite a bit.

If you split a hair and split it again and again you can find anything you want.

Yes. They did put a small pack of 4 cigarettes in C-rats meals. But they were awful. I don’t remember anyone smoking more than one when I was in Nam.

16 weeks? You’re in the home stretch. I could have written this out in crayon. Smoked 1 1/2 - 2 packs a day for thirty years, my doc put the fear of God in me one day, so I chucked the last pack and went to e-cigs. That was five years ago next week. No more hacking up pieces of gray phlegm the size of chicken livers and lung tissue every morning, no more heaviness in my chest, food tastes and smells infinitely better, and I can smell a smoker from twenty feet away. That stale ashtray smell. I still keep thinking to myself, “My God, did I walk around smelling like that all the time?” It’s a matter of motivation. I went through several brands of e-cigs until I found the one I like. But, it’s the best of both worlds. I can vape at work, the house doesn’t stink like a run-down dive bar, no holes burned into my clothes, car seat, or furniture, but I get my fix. It’ll get easier. I’m to the point now where I walk away if someone is blowing smoke. Mind you, I not one of those reformed smoker zealots - they’re as full-on nuts as Scientologists, Hare Krishnas, or Moonies. I just know what it did to my body, how much money I spent over the decades feeding the habit (I coulda bought a house and a boat with the money I spent), and how much better I enjoy life now. If they wanna smoke, go for it. I still miss a Marlboro after dinner, in a bar with a cold one, after a good session with a wife or girlfriend, but the e-cig has been a godsend, and really helped curtail the initial withdrawal. I told my doc that I went to an e-cig after he told me to quit, and I figured he was gonna give me an earful. All he did was smile, and told me that he’d had more patients quit smoking with e-cigs than all the Chantix he ever prescribed.

As long as it’s working for you. Yup, no more hacking like you said. I can’t NOT admit that. Probably 50 out of 70 years I partook. And it’s getting expensive as crap now too. Good job.

Keep plugging away, FRiend. If I can do it, you can too. I'll be your personal support group if I have to. My brother-in-law has tried every smoking cessation therapy there is out there, and then some, but he just can't kick the coffin nails. And he's a lot less self-indulgent and impulsive then I am. Just keep your eye on the ball. It's a matter of motivation and willpower. Hell, I told my doc I wanted to get back down to my fighting weight from twenty years ago. We worked out a plan, and I've lost 17 pounds in six weeks. Motivation and willpower.

Going on five years for me since I had my last cig. I vape, started at 24mg of nicotine, down to 3 and could probably go to 1 if I wanted. I feel great and do not miss cigs. For anyone trying to quit via e cigs, do not let anyone discourage you with bad information. I asked my doctor and he said, “god bless e cigarettes”.

>However, if at the same time, E-cigs are normalized and 100 teenagers, start to vape, become addicted...then switch to cigarettes.

A) There’s zero evidence of people starting with vaping moving on to cigarettes. Cigarettes taste like butt compared to vaping.

B) Vaping is much easier to quit than cigarettes.

That’s not entirely clear. Nicotine is one of the safest and more effective cogitation enhancement drugs.
