I worked with a Peter Byrnes. One day our new receptionist answered the phone and asked, “Who’s Peter Byrnes?” I answered, “Not mine, but thanks for asking.” She never asked that again.

Interestingly in Japan from what I understand - they would often adopt in from another branch of the family in order to continue a line or if a daughter only then the husband would some times take the family name.
