Remembering JOURNOLIST and progressive media’s bag of tricks
hotair.com ^ | 7/15/17 | John Sexton

"For those who don’t remember it, Journolist was just a listserv created by Ezra Klein.
The list was invitation only and was mostly made up of progressive journalists.
In theory, the list was a kind of digital water cooler where like-minded people could talk to others in the field.
That may have been all it was much of the time, but when candidate Obama got in trouble in 2008,
it also became a place for partisans to discuss a coordinated media strategy."

When Kevin Drum (Mother Jones) argued that wasn’t the kind of campaign Obama wanted to run, Ackerman replied, “Kevin, I’m not saying OBAMA should do this. I’m saying WE should do this.”
The particular charge, in this case, was racism because it was a defense of Obama, but more broadly this kind of strategic attack comes in several flavors
including charges of sexism, anti-gay hate, Islamophobia, etc.

The Journolist discussion took place nearly a decade ago, but in retrospect, I’m struck by how these three basic approaches
—kill it, ignore it, call them haters—seem like media archetypes now.
You can probably think of your own examples but the ones that come immediately to mind are
CBS News decision to sit on video showing President Obama had not called the Benghazi attack terrorism until hours before the election.
You may recall that Obama was widely considered the loser of the 1st presidential debate with Mitt Romney. He needed a comeback win.
And the winning moment of the 2nd debate was his exchange with Romney on Benghazi.
Obama claimed he had called the attack terrorism the next day." (More data, examples and information available at the news source)

The Journolist exists, even today, except under another name
Look at the organized media "daisy-chain" where all the media become indignant, over the same issue, all at the same time.
Besides fighting "the Swamp", Trump is fighting against the media 'mono-issue of the day' which replaced the former Journolist.

Every evening the national news shows appear to have precisely the same script. I can channel-hop and never miss a beat.

I doubt they’ve stopped anymore than I doubt that the DNC is no longer seeding and faxing the day’s talking points and coaching seminar callers as they used to openly do on their own primary website.

JournOlist is what lead the charge against Palin in 2008. The flooded the airwaves, print and the internet with a never ending flood of attack stories, gossip and rumor mongering.

Especially noticeable when suddenly a queer buzzword like gravitas is being used by every talking head to deny Bush.

Joyrnolist also coordinated to drive the daily messaging at press conferences even determining with journalist would ask which question.

After the Podesta emails leaked we also have clear evidence they coordinated with one campaign to deny all others the election (in primary and general).

These are a few quotes from Mark Twain regarding the media - which was essentially just newspapers back then.. Interesting..

“It has become a sarcastic proverb that a thing must be true if you saw it in a newspaper. That is the opinion intelligent people have of that lying vehicle in a nutshell. But the trouble is that the stupid people — who constitute the grand overwhelming majority of this and all other nations — do believe and are moulded and convinced by what they get out of a newspaper, and there is where the harm lies.”

“Among us, the newspaper is a tremendous power. It can make or mar any man’s reputation. It has perfect freedom to call the best man in the land a fraud and a thief, and he is destroyed beyond help.”

“There are laws to protect the freedom of the press’s speech, but none that are worth anything to protect the people from the press.”

“I have a sort of vague general idea that there is too much liberty of the press in this country, and that through the absence of all wholesome restraint the newspaper has become in a large degree a national curse, and will probably damn the Republic yet.”

Because David Brock's Media Matters and Share Blue tell them what to say.
