This story is BS. Black bears pose no threat unless you represent a risk to cubs. Secondly, I don’t care how fast you are. If a bear is serious about coming after, you’re not going to out run it.

I was chased by a bear once but luckily I had my bear repellent. It’s something I invented, it’s a tape of this connected to a loud speaker.

Awww... I don't remember that incident. People tend to think black bears aren't dangerous. That can be a fatal assumption.

The answer is actually quite simple.

Only by continuous training and by being at the top of their game would the bears have had a chance to catch a top Kenyan runner. Looks like the pair of bears should have trained harder.

Motivation. It's good to have a partner on those days when you really don't feel like getting up, lacing on the running shoes, and knocking off a few beehives or picnic baskets. I know I've felt that way.

YEEOWCH! I do remember that one. Guess she went into the enclosure to pet the “pretty” bear, totally exposing her head and neck to the animal. She was luuucky to survive it.
