The kid—whose dad is an engineer for Toyota!—came up with the idea for a device that detects when a child is alone in a car, turns on the AC, and sends out alerts/alarms after a period of time.

It’s an in-car motion detector that calls 911 if it senses a small kid alone in a locked car. Hooked up to the AC system to blow cold air until help arrives.
I see a problem, but perhaps the problem could be a solution.
The cops will come by to ticket the owner of the car for leaving their vehicle running. Hopefully they would then see the child in the car.
The fact that the IQ in this nation has dropped to where this is a thing bothers me.
What if the car's AC doesn't work ?
I assume that it would work for pets too. Good idea!
Very nice. Waze has a simple query when you reach your destination, tells you to check the backseat for kids before you leave.
The accidental car death preventions are for very exhausted new parents who don’t have 100% custody of their child. It’s a bad thing to share early child care equally. Rethink it. Best to have the nursing mom have 100% bodily custody of the baby, so thst it becomes automatic for her to be the one with the child, and for the dad to step in and give her breaks at home.
Sharing equally means that neither has a 100% instinct that the baby is always with them. That’s how those deaths occur.
They also occur from drunken and drugged parents but we can’t help those morons.

How about when you put the car in park, the car says “child on board”.
Why not reserve your snark for those who stuff an old digital clock into a case and call it an invention?
While there are plenty of the lazy cases where a parent goes into a bar while leaving the kid in the car, or into a nail salon, etc... there are a number of cases down here in FL that occurred when something came up for the parent who usually takes the child to day care, like a doc appointment, or to go out of town, and the other parent who never or almost never is in charge of taking the kid to daycare suddenly has his routine broken, and the child is put in a kiddie-seat strapped backwards on the back of the car, where the child falls into a deep snooze for he trip.
The parent-in-charge starts the trip to work and while thinking of everything he’s got to do that day at work, starts thinking of deadlines, an argument with the spouse the night before, the other kid who is ill, that aging parent who they are also caring for, or money problems, and drifts off and starts following the well-established routine he always has where he doesn’t have a kid in the car, and forgets to stop by the day care.
Then after a few hours at work taking care of customers, one of them makes a comment about heir kids and the worker suddenly remembers he left his kid in the car.
There was a report years back that showed there was a connection between these car deaths and the introduction of the laws requiring the car seat to be installed in the back rather than the passenger seat up front.
Bingo.
On the one hand I'm with you: how far do we have to go to protect stupid people from themselves?
On the other hand, how far do we have to go to protect the rest of us (and the children of the stupid people) from them?

There was (assume there still is) a small solar powered exhaust fan that you put on a window and is locked in when the window is rolled up.

As far as children are concerned, I simply have no solution to morons who don’t know they have THEIR OWN CHILD in the back seat of the car they are driving. We have reached the point of reductio ad absurdum when we have to design complicated mechanical devices to stop parents from killing the children they forget they have.

They say? How many of you out there with any relationship with a child, parent, aunt/uncle....anything, do not know you have a child in the seat beside you or the back seat. when you pull the car into the parking space? If they are that young, they will be in a car carrier seat big enough that it will not fit in the glove box and you have got to know it is there. I raised two, and sit for my grandkids now on occasion. At no time do I get into a car or exit it do I not look to see what’s in there if for no other reason than to not make it obvious for someone to need to break in and steal my briefcase or laptop..
BTW, where does this device get it’s cool air in a car hot enough to kill a child if it’s attached to the headrest and if you have to put it up and make sure it’s on, wouldn’t you look in the car and see something as large as a child?
