The full weight of the law in this country only bears upon white males anymore, that much is becoming clear. Everyone else has an excuse of some kind and the courts let it slide.
The proper term for a child sitting on a parent’s lap is a “Puerto Rican airbag.”
Alaska. Many people of all melanin do not use them.
The government has to represent the children in terms of their safety in these cases. I’m not allowed to have my children sleep on the roof of my house, and I shouldn’t have them in a vehicle without protecting them.
Years ago we were visiting a lake in NY state, and NY State Police were flagging down many vehicles (including ours) to ensure children were secured. I wasn’t thrilled, but completely understood it; these cops are sick of scraping kids off the asphalt.
Per the article, the driver has been cited. Which sounds like she was ticketed for a moving violation. Which, depending on TX law, may be all LE can do on the car seat issue. Hopefully a child abuse investigation will result and more can be done.
The child was in a car seat. Wonder if it was properly installed? Instructions are usually multilingual. Unless it was a used seat when she purchased it. In many places, a parent can take the car seat to a local LE agency and the cops will show the adults how to properly install it.
Victor Davis Hanson wrote about it in California, where he owns a farm in the Central Valley. Out there, they simply have 2 systems of justice (informally). The first system applies to people that can afford the fines and/or need to stay out of jail (translated: mainly white people), and the second system of justice applies to those who cannot afford the fines and don’t really care what’s on their criminal record.
He gives example, after example, including complying with ‘environmental’ regulations, registering/insuring/inspecting of cars, camping out on private property (his), dumping trash wherever (his property again), not reporting income and collecting government ‘benefits’ at the same time...
Sounds like there’s some of that in South Texas. Sorry for the kids, but until/unless we become a nation of laws again, get used to it.
What strikes me is that people are STILL being allowed to drive cars with Takata air bags. At the very least, they should be removed.
What part of Texas are you referring to?
I’ve noticed that for years. I’m in Ohio but traveled for work for years. Cultural more than geographic I guess. Rather spend the money on shiny wheel rims than car seats.
Enforcement = who can/will pay the fines.
The government should not be involved with things like that with the family of a married couple. I know that even many libertarians do believe that so long as we have a government it should take care of other peoples’ kids so you don’t have to resent others’ ways of dealing with their kids.
No.
A modern form of Darwinian selection, that’s all.
In my area if you’re a florist with a corner shop you have to pay for pemit, insurance, rent, tax, disability, all kinds of things.
it really Cuts into profits.
but if you’re Mexican, as if by Magic, law enforcement will do nothing if you occupy an entire street corner and you have the exact same volume of flowers simply stacked up on the sidewalk.
no insurance, no permitting, no rent, nothing. it’s much, much better.
indeed, you are right next to the motorists, who must stop for the stop sign. It’s basically a floral drive through with the customers, who pay cash, never needing to find parking.
Uncle Sam is never the wiser, so no tax. Of course they’re also on food stamps and God knows what else.
it’s profoundly unfair.
An excellent account of his writing, I love his stories.
he’s an amazing describer.
his hobby is riding his bicycle through the countryside so he sees all kinds of things and documents it all.
Link above to TX law on car seat use. Violation gets a ticket and a fine between $25 to $250. That's not what I'd call a deterrent.
” my guess is that police officers do not enjoy hitting a poor family with a $200.00 fine”
NC cops enforce the seat belt law regardless of social class.
Amen, to that brother. It is clear that the only group not exempt from the law is middle class, middle aged white males.
My brother and I got to play with mercury a couple of times when Mom dropped the glass fever thermometer on the tile floor, shattering it. She went for a broom while the mercury immediately rolled itself into a ball. We poked it on the floor to divide it, and rolled the two balls back and forth in the palms of our hands.
Other charities and agencies do the same.
There's no excuse but ignorance. And ignorance is curable.
And for that reason--- some would say --- ignorance is also culpable.
