Smithsonian Magazine Mocks Memory of Conservative Talk Show Host Joe Pyne
NewsBusters ^ | June 24, 2017 | P.J. Gladnick

The basic subject matter of an article in the June edition of the Smithsonian Magazine is actually quite interesting. It is about the ongoing restoration of many videotapes of the old Joe Pyne television show. Unfortunately, the author, Kevin Cook, chose to use this restoration as a way to slam not only the generally conservative Joe Pyne but current conservatives in the media as well.

However, despite Cook's petty slams, his article does provide some interesting information about Joe Pyne who many consider the father of entertaining talk radio and television interviewing. The good news is that sometime in the near future the public will have access to many Joe Pyne interviews long thought to be lost.

I had subscribed to the magazine for about 20 years. Then in the early 2000’s they started in big time declaring global warming. I stopped the magazine and have never looked back or regretted it. I still get emails asking me to continue with them again. Not doing it. And now this demonstrates that I was RIGHT. MAGA!!

Same thing here. Smithsonian and Scientific American. Both went entirely over the edge around the same time and lost me as a long time subscriber.

Joe Pyne was one of the greats. Also used to like Morton Downey Jr. Those two were cut from the same cloth! Both left us way before their time.

The granddaddy of them all.

Savage has just been channeling Pyne for a couple of decades.

The stupid Libs had forgotten him. Maybe they were too stoned to watch when he was on.

He’s actually pretty tame compared to current fire breathers. But more cutting at the same time.

Can’t wait to see the tapes. Loved the Joe Pyne show back in the ‘60s.

Joe Pyne, Alan Burke, and in later years Mort Downey - they were entertaining.

SA and Nat Geo for me. I had a complete set back to the late 30’s for Nat G.

I love this quote from the Smithsonian article hatchet job:
Nearly forgotten today, Joe Pyne ran roughshod over America’s airwaves in the 1950s and ’60s. A charismatic bully in a jacket and tie, he grilled hippies, Black Panthers, “pinkos,” “fairies” and “women’s libbers,” practically inventing the attack interview.

What's not to like!

My father loved him and would stay up late to watch him.

I was a regular viewer of the Joe Pyne Show. It was immensely entertaining.B-1 Bob Dornan, fresh out of the Air Force, was a frequent protagonist of liberals (before they called themselves progressives). I also remember George Lincoln Rockwell, of the American Nazi Party, locking horns with Joe.Joe Pyne had one leg missing, I think from a war injury (don’t remember). He was chain smoker (he’s shown smoking on the linked tape)and he met his demise from lung cancer at the age of only 45.

I have a dim memory of hearing about that, but don’t actually recall seeing that particular show. I was in my late teens at the time.

#14: "Wonder why both Pyne and Downey left us “ before their time?"

I assumed it was common knowledge. Maybe not. Both Pyne and Downey were chain smokers. Both died of lung cancer, although Pyne was much younger at the time of his death. I think Pyne was in his forties and Downey was in his sixties.

Tom Snyder was another talker who was taken down by smoking. Seems to go with the territory.
