Desalination is the solution to fresh water shortages. The same people who want you to drink sewer water also want you to eat crickets and grasshoppers to save the earth.

The amount of pharmaceuticals in waste water is very high and they have absolutely no way to filter them out.

Considering the situation of historical droughts in California and other states it seems like an intelligent idea to take purified water and pump it back into the aquifers rather than piss it away into the ocean. I for one would be much more concerned with produce coming from Mexico where the workers use the fields as toilets than water that has been purified to such a degree that minerals have to be added back into it.
