If I could pick up a scanner and bags when I walk in the door....scan and bag as I go, I would be ok with that. But I hate the...put everything in your basket, empty basket to belt, scan everything, pay, bag everything. That is just too much work for me.

Sam’s Club has an app that allows you to scan your products as you add them to your cart and then pay with a credit card. Then, you totally bypass the checkouts, and the person at the door on your way out scans the barcode on your phone. I’m not sure what happens when you try to buy alcohol, but other than that, it is very easy.

I’m with you, especially on the gas station issue. Great job for teenagers and I really appreciated having someone check the air in my tires, the oil level, add fluids when necessary, wash my front window and pump the gas for me.

Grocery stores used to automatically carry your groceries out for you, now if you want a carry-out at my local Kroger’s, they usually have to find someone. Seems like that went the way of the paper grocery bag.

Bah Humbug is right!

I really can’t stand those self checkout lanes. Even though I’ve developed a couple of kiosks with touchscreens and thoroughly understand the mechanics behind them - I still will avoid them every chance I get.

I’ve never used one at Wal-Mart, but I love the self-check out at my grocery store. It’s fast, accurate, and beats standing in line for my normally small number of items. I have to say, though, the staff this store has monitoring the self-check stations are always really on the ball and keep things moving on those few times somebody has an issue.

That’s how it is at the Target near me. Only the people who need to do returns or something complicated go to the human cashier, everyone else uses the scanner and is on their way in a fraction of the time.

And?

The government already taxes me half to death to help the unskilled and elderly. You want us to hamstring our businesses for their sake as well?

When they start giving me a discount for bagging my own stuff I’ll think about it. I can though, see the attraction for folks who have only one or two items.

I’ve tried the self check outs a couple of times at Walmart and Home Depot. Do NOT like them. They always mess up and you spend ten times longer waiting around for someone to come fix it. No, I’ve given up on them and use the human checkers.

What good does it do WalMart to have 24 traditional check out lanes with only 5 people working them?

Bet they didn’t reduce purchase prices on their items. Who’s pocketing the money saved from firing human cashiers?

At Kroger you are required to use self-checkout during most hours in my town.

I would be taking my wallet to their biggest competitor.

I liked not having to get out of the car and not smelling like gas the rest of the day, dribbling dirty windshield water down my nice clothes and having ick all over my hands. The older I get, the more I appreciate someone else bagging my groceries and taking them to the car. And it is impossible to speak to a human on the phone these days.

Mayberry is dead. My bank has all new tellers. It used to be nice to go through the window and have them greet my by name and ask how the kids were doing. Those days are gone. The other day, one had the nerve to demand to see my ID. Yeah, yeah, I know but that was the last straw. I informed her I’d been banking there longer than she’s been alive and she’d darn well better remember me next time.

Amazon opened a headquarters and a few warehouses in Texas a couple years ago. It is opening a new distribution center in New Braunfels, TX.

The only reason I go to Whole Foods for a few items is because they source their meats and fish etc. You can know the exact farm and do your research on how healthy the animal.

Well, one more reason. It’s the closest place where I can walk in and get 30 chicken wings, or certain vegetables. Can’t even find wings at most stores these days and not enough. Also chicken feet for making bone broth richer.

Of course, no stock boy has ever done that. Neither has the customer who squeeze that tomato right before you put it in your bag.
