Joining the rarefied $100 million-plus club in a salesroom punctuated by periodic gasps from the crowd, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s powerful 1982 painting of a skull brought $110.5 million at Sotheby’s, to become the sixth most expensive work ever sold at auction. Only 10 other works have broken the $100 million mark.

“He’s now in the same league as Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso,” said the dealer Jeffrey Deitch, an expert on Basquiat.

Basquait was first a graffiti "artist". He now holds the record for the most paid for a piece by an American artist.

And you can't sell it!

No one wants the crap, especially for anywhere near what you paid.

Just titled: “Dog crap”.

“Think I’ll take up painting...”

Make sure you identify as black and start living as a homosexual too. That’s the only REAL reason why Basquiat became “famous”. Also, you’ll need to have an idiot’s haircut, and die of a heroin overdose at age 27.

On the bright side, no actual artistic talent is needed.

Another perverse, unexpected consequence of our unbacked, totally fiat, centrally-controlled Federal Reserve currency.

There is a giant graffiti covered boulder near the highway turnoff to my place that looks a lot like that. I wonder how much they would pay for that. It should be worth a lot more since it is 30 times bigger in area, and in 3-D.

“...invest...”?

The story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” comes to mind....

Fortunately, I don’t need to pay inflated prices for the unique and exquisite art that decorates MY home.

For example, “The Yellow Bird”, a vivid piece in the style of Paul Klee, was a gift, so its cost to me was “zero”.

“The Yellow Bird” is a finger-painting by my grandson, when he was three. I consider its value to be “priceless”.

I cannot prove it but I believe modern art was invented to launder money.

That is the only plausible explanation I can think of.

Art truly died with the impressionists.

There is no talent demonstrated in that pic.

A waste of paint and canvas
