Why is there a ribbon cutting if it is just a net going up? We should have Nancy Pelosi test the net, not cut a ribbon.
The idea would be that you break something and incapacitate yourself if you jump on to the barrier and that would make it hard to get to the edge.
It has to be far enough down that it's a real obstacle.
And some people would be psychologically deterred by seeing the barrier.
In either case, the idea is that a barrier gives rescue personal time to talk a jumper down or pull them off the barrier.
A lot also depends on the fascination people have with the Golden Gate Bridge.
In other cities, they put a barrier on one bridge and people just jump off another.
But if the Golden Gate Bridge is a suicide magnet maybe jumping off another bridge isn't on would-be suicides' minds.
Then again, maybe they'll have to do something similar to the other bridges in the area.
