FULL TITLE: 'Everybody who flies United knows it's awful': Governor Chris Christie blasts airline for evicted passenger controversy and asks Trump administration to ban overbooking

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie denounced United Airlines as 'awful' on Wednesday and demanded the Trump administration step in and prevent the aviation industry from overbooking flights following the forced removal of a bloodied passenger on Sunday.

Christie was reacting to the national backlash that erupted against United after one of its passengers was filmed being violently dragged off a plane just before takeoff to make room for the airline's crew members even though he paid for a ticket.

After the social media uproar ignited widespread calls for a boycott, United CEO Oscar Munoz issued an apology and promised to investigate the incident.

The New Jersey governor told Fox & Friends on Wednesday that the incident was the result of a problematic culture at United.

United, Delta and American, they ALL suck. You are better off trying some of the regional carriers if they are available.

Flight-free since November 2001.

Incredibly happy about it.

Delta has sucked since the 90’s. United, as Gov. Christie said has sucked since they merged with Continental. Not sure what American Airlines problem is.

Q: How many seats does Christie buy when he flies? If United doesn’t require him to buy two, how bad can UA be?

I can’t see why overbooking is necessary, unless the airline is so greedy they can’t take each day as it comes. There are usually more passengers than seats at each boarding. Cancellations can be filled in with standbys. In my travelling days, originating at BWI, I was frequently a standby to get on a flight from Chicago to Racine, or Twin Cities to Grand Rapids. Just go with it.

Make Christie head of FAA with task to establish passenger rights, like fit him in a seat and restroom.

Delta good, Alaska okay (has smallest seats), American and United bad. Spirit, horrible. SOuthwest and Jet Blue good. I am at SeaTac for Delta flight now.

They left my group waiting in an airport in Mexico for an additional five hours while they flew in a replacement flight crew, which caused us to miss our connecting flight in Texas, which resulted in our eventually being flown home to a different airport 2 counties over and no consideration was given for a shuttle or a taxi or anything. Thankfully one of the women in our group was able to get her boyfriend to come pick us up in a large SUV at about 1:00 in the morning.

Flying United is no longer an option. If I can’t find a different carrier to suit my travel needs I’ll stay home.

I’m expecting a good flame for being a pro-United customer. I have flown them 50,000+ miles a year for years. I can expect 1- 3 flight segments a year to encounter a mechanical, weather or crew related significant delay resulting in having to take a next day flight. But overall the airline has been accommodating to my needs and transports me safely and effectively to my destination. I really have no complaints and prefer United to Southwest.

As I understand it they didn’t over book the flight. They had four employees they needed to get to Louisville.

Is United always as bad as the latest incident. No. I have taken in a number of times in recent years and been as satisfied as I have come to expect from a business where the prices are low enough the average person can afford to fly - unlike the “glory days” of the airlines.

I am not saying United is “wonderful” either. But politicians like Christie (I guess he has had too little press lately) are mostly just grandstanding.

Even Congress, instead of exercising their oversight where it belongs, which is with the federal regulators & any appropriate DOJ area, they’re always seeking to grandstand and short circuit the processes of either the regulators investigations, or the courts.

Politicians should start out sitting back and judging what the bodies they created to have oversight over an area are doing, or do, and then judge them, hold THEIR feet to the fire. Hauling companies before Congress FIRST is nonsense.

Sell regular tickets up to the capacity of the airplane. Sell standby tickets to cover from capacity up to what they now overbook.
Standby ticket holders get a cheaper fare and are told of the risks of being bumped off the flight ahead of time.

Given a choice between flying UAL and living in NJ, I’ll fly UAL. LOL But I do find Christie’s remark humorous. Hope to see the CEO of UAL throw a dart back the other way.
