The real question is not whether children are being killed or not. About a half million people have been killed in Syria over the last 7 years. Our policy there in supporting the rebels against Assad has been disastrous.
Assad has agreed, numerous times, not to use chemical weapons. He supposedly got rid of all his chemical weapons 3 years ago. Chemical weapons attacks have been ongoing (with much smaller effects) pretty regularly, it has been reported.
The real question is whether the U.S. is willing to enforce agreements or not. The U.S. has been building a reputation as a paper tiger for 8 years under Obama. Assad never had consequences before.
That just stopped. It is extremely dangerous to be perceived as weak. It invites attack.
As to credibility, that is a big problem. It is difficult to determine what is real, and what is a false flag. That is an important part of the job of our intelligence services.
The President released information on the radar track of the attacking aircraft. We know far, far, more than that. The whole space there is almost certainly being watched by multiple assets including several satellites, drones, radars, multi-spectral electronic recording and analysis, and much, much more.
I believe our government knows who did this with considerable certainty.
The question is whether we are being played by our own government. Whether the President is being played.
I think he has ways to test and know if he is being played or not. Attempting to feed him doctored information is extremely dangerous to those doing so.
If that is really all this is about, enforcing agreements, then I can be fine with that. Just hoping it doesn’t become more than that.
Only time will tell. While President Trump has been in office less than three months, so far his actions have been pretty impressive.
We need to keep watching.
