On March 15th, 2017, the Florida State Attorney's Office released a video of Ashad Russell, a Florida resident with a concealed handgun permit, fatally shooting another man, Edward Strother, who was attacking a Lee County, Florida Sheriff Deputy Dean Bardes. Prosecutors had cleared Russell of criminal charges on February 15th, 2017. The shooting was found justified because the deputy's life was determined to be in danger. The case stems from an incident that occurred on November 15, 2016. The Florida State Attorney's Office just released cell phone video of the event.
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott wrote this on his Facebook page the day after the attack:
Earlier this week, two heroes met on I-75 and while they had never met before, one would save the others life. . . .

Great video. Why did they let him hang and worry for 60 days? This should have been decided in 2 or 3 days at most. Just to be sure the man was in no way connected to the guy he shot or some such.
And the Sheriffs department should pay his legal bills. This man should not suffer ANY hardship because he had the guts to help.
I have spoken with many people who are sick of criminals white, black, blue or anything else. Not all blues are good, not all blacks are bad, not all whites are privileged.

Especially when the deputy was saying to him, “ Shoot him, shoot him.”
Save a life but go through 60 days of living hell..?
that really makes me think and that’s Florida, that’s extremely disturbing.
I’m happy the man’s life was saved, I’m happy a citizen helped but wow, this really gives me pause.
Why do they always slice and dice videos? Would like to have seen an unedited version of the video.
Go Florida concealed carriers!
Thank you, Mr. Russell. Good work, and good shootin’!
Should’ve taken less than two minutes to decide the guy did nothing wrong. And why publish his name? I guess the media doesn’t care if he gets death threats.
Excellent outcome!
RACIST!
He was saving a white cop, what a sell out!

So they gave him an award, right?
Deputy Bardes, off duty:
Props to the armed citizen but he made a potentially grave error.
If you’re ever involved in a shooting, DO NOT disarm to wait for the police to arrive. The guy you’ve shot could just be playing possum. Or he might have friends, family or accomplices nearby. Only now they mighty PO’ed, and they probably didn’t get the memo that the fight is over. NEVER take it for granted that you have neutralized the only potential threat and leave yourself defenseless.
DO NOT disarm until the police have arrived and you can be certain they will provide for your immediate security. Until then, RELOAD (you did bring extra ammo, didn’t you?), scan the area for other threats, and if none are evident (and ONLY then), holster (or pocket) your weapon. And if you think it prudent, relocate to a more defensible position to wait from.
When the police arrive, raise your hands. To a policeman arriving at the scene of a reported shooting, a bystander raising his hands is the universal signal for “I’m somebody you need to be talking to.” And they’ll take it from there.
NEVER lose control of your firearm until a policeman is right there to take possession of it AND to protect you from some other guy you probably should have shot but didn’t (or just didn’t shoot enough).
