'Hey, bruh,' then gunfire, as wounded NOPD officer recounts shooting at po-boy shop

A New Orleans police severely wounded outside a Faubourg Marigny po-boy shop in September 2014 said he had no warning before the ambush, only hearing one of two approaching men say, "Hey, bruh," before lifting a chrome revolver and starting to shoot.

"I can't tell you why they shot me," NOPD Officer Jonathan Smith testified Wednesday (March 8) in the trial of accused gunman Cornelius Barthelemy. "I don't know what the reason was behind me being shot."

What Smith couldn't do Wednesday was identify Barthelemy as the man who shot him, explaining that the incident unfurled too fast for him to do anything but react. Police said Smith managed to return fire from the ground, striking Barthelemy in the abdomen and accomplice Caesar Adams in the chest with a gunshot that proved fatal over the course of the ensuing few hours.

Barthelemy, 36, is charged with attempted first-degree murder in what authorities say was a premeditated decision to try killing a police officer. He also is charged with manslaughter in the death of Adams, 36, who prosecutors say Barthelemy refused to take to a hospital for fear of arrest. Additional charges of obstruction of justice and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon also are in play at the trial.

"I saw a person with a red shirt on who pulled a silver gun out," Smith repeated under cross-examination. "I attempted to prevent the gun from coming up. And I heard gunshots."

Regan pressed Smith on why he shot two people at the scene, if he only saw one was armed.

"I was trying to eliminate the threat," Smith said.

"Did you go through an investigation to see why you shot an unarmed man?" Regan asked.

"I don't even know if I was aiming at him," Smith said. "He got hit."

The article goes on to say that this guy on trial is trying to say the dead guy was the shooter. Well the dead guy can't defend himself.

Police said Jonathan Smith was wounded Sept. 14 when a gunman opened fire on him while he worked an off-duty security detail at Gene's Po-Boys in the Marigny.

James Wilson, 26, was booked with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder of a policeman after surrendering to Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's deputies in connection with the Sept. 14 shooting of NOPD Officer Jonathan Smith at Gene's Po-Boys in the Marigny. Wilson is the suspected getaway driver involved in the crime, police said.

Cornelius Barthelemy, 34, is the suspected gunman police say fired upon NOPD Officer Jonathan Smith early Sept. 14 as Smith worked a uniformed, off-duty security detail at Gene's Po-Boys at the corner of Elysian Fields and St. Claude avenues in the Marigny.

BTW, Officer Jonathan Smith suffered a shattered femur from one bullet and partial paralysis from a second bullet lodged near his spine. He spent 2 1/2 years in a wheelchair and on crutches recovering.

A brave guy to be able to return effective fire after a wounding so serious.

He may be big but he can react quickly and shoot effectively, even while severely wounded

. He is a big guy but when you wear a large shirt over a ballistics vest it makes you look bigger. That is if he is wearing one.

You've been to NOLA. There are some really big criminals and it helps to have a big cop on hand to handle them.

The cop’s alive, one perp is dead and the other perp is going away for a very long time. Other than the cop getting wounded it sounds like a fairly good story.

Blue lives matter a whole lot more than criminal lives.

Jurors were promised they will hear from Joseph "Renegade" Wilson, who was in the SUV with Barthelemy and Adams. Prosecutors said Wilson will testify that Barthelemy stated his intention to kill a police officer after spotting Smith outside the po-boy shop.

It was a targeted shooting of a Police Officer.
