7-Year-Old Loses Bowling Medal for Wearing Wrong Pants. Then He Got it Back.
Global News ^

A seven-year-old Newfoundland boy and his bowling team will receive gold medals after they were stripped of a title because they wore the wrong pants.

Todd Powell went public with his anger over his son Grayson’s disqualification from a provincial tournament in St. John’s over the weekend.

He says he was told before the competition that black pants were required, but on short notice he was only able to find a pair of faded black jeans for the boy.

Powell says the kids were on the lanes waiting for their medals when he was informed that the team had been disqualified.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Bowling Council initially stood by its decision, but has since apologized.

It says it can’t reverse its decision, but the team’s victory will be recognized at a special gold medal ceremony.

I thought the only required attire was goofy looking shoes?

If they had declared that they were “transgendering” and that was the reason for the pants, they would have been given triple awards.

I was going to express a lack of sympathy, assuming they ignored the rules and then complained later. But, if the rules say “black pants”, and the kid had black jeans, albeit faded, and so far as I know, jeans are pants....so....

That kid is either one heck of a bowler or does lots of participating.

I see medals for different sports so the kid does a lot of participating, and from the number of gold a silver, I would say he does it well. Good for him not sitting on his ass playing video games.

I am picturing this poor kid as a 7-year-old Al Bundy and a large lady saying “Good game, kid, but YOU NEED SHOES!”

Or, in this case, “YOU NEED PANTS! BLACK PANTS!”

They look like mainly participation medals. I don’t see anyone that good at some many pursuits.

I’ve gotten a few for completing some 150-200 mile bike rides.

It was a charity tour, not a race. As I recall, some were gold. I’ve been in the first ten to the finish and the last six, out of several hundred.

For the record, the last six was by adding a 25 mile loop to get 100 miles. Very few riders did it that year because the first day had pretty brutal weather. that automatically put us a couple hours behind the pack.

But, that said, good for the league. Penalizing a kid because his dad couldn’t find or afford black pants is kind of dumb.

Awsome! Let's knock a little kid we don't know, making assumptions on incomplete information, and then oh yeah, and then insert ourselves into the story. I don't care if they are participation awards, the kid is going out and trying and kids shouldn't be robbed of their achievement for stupid reasons. I would wonder how connected the second place teams coach or parents are to the league leadership.

My first thought too was that this had to come from the coach or head of the second place team or a parent of a second place team member. Just wouldn't expect it in Newfoundland. Sure, we told our share of Newfie jokes back in Toronto, but there was an underlying respect that they were down to earth, common sense type folks.
