I wonder if said red sedan was actually a red Prius, and if said vegan female was single, grey-haired, and wearing a mumu and Birkenstocks?
Maybe she’s vegan only when drunk? :)

Why did the vegan cross the road?

Chickens have a short life anyway. They are meant to either produce eggs for food or be food themselves. They cannot survive in the wild “free as a bird” any longer than they can survive in the chicken coop laying eggs.
There is a colony of feral chickens in a semi-rural neighborhood a few miles west of me. Newcomers to the area complain about the crowing of the roosters. They've been around for years, probably a lot of generations.
I’ve had a few escapees from the chicken coop and they have hatched out several broods and lots of roosters. We catch the roosters up and sell them but even still we keep a couple of them for the yard bird breeding program...
