I too, won't assess right or wrong, because we don't yet know why the officer is hanging on to Dorscht. I'm going to guess though that the officer was not the provocateur. Here's the timeline in the video that I saw which imo escalated the incident.

2:13 - A teen with a red backpack charges at the officer and makes contact while the big black pushes the officer. These are two assaults.

2:21 - The big black kid strikes the officer. Assault number three.

2:22 - A teen in a purple top and blue pants jumps the hedge and appears to be trying to get behind the officer. It is at this point that the officer reaches for his weapon. Possibly, someone has made a serious threat or he believes that a coordinated assault is going to take him down. And if he goes down, he is going to suffer serious bodily harm.

2:31 - I don't see a gun flash, but people are moving out of the area rather quickly.

Just don’t count on instant, magical results. There’s a video that has been going around for the last few days of a cat fight / brawl in the street at the Austin bar scene. Cops are hosing the participants down with some sort of pepper or tear gas spray, and it isn’t slowing them down much. Now, maybe yours is much better, but then maybe it’s not. In any case, viewing the video is instructive for that reason - and the whole thing is amusing.

Well, the alternative of opening fire with my CCW is not too palatable in our political environment. Of course, if someone shows a weapon, all bets are off. But the US Forest Service says an 800 lb bear will be dissuaded. So, its the best we can do.

Oh yeah, I’m not saying don’t carry pepper/bear spray - I’m just saying make sure you have realistic expectations, and that video helps with that.

There’s always more to the original story than we are led to believe. IMO, I don’t believe this started over a “get off my lawn thing.” Something said by the cop about disrespecting the girl.

What I see from the video:

Video starts w/cop, black t-shirt and black hoodie kid struggling w/cop.
3 kids surrounding cop - not doing anything - cop restraining black hoodie kid - not hitting, just holding.

“Once the purple guy jumped the hedge, I can see why the officer felt the need to get his weapon in control before he was tackled - especially with purple dummy reaching into his back pocket like he’s somebody.”
Yup, I saw that too.

Gang of teens - more than one - multiple assaults on cop. The gang of teens tackled the cop over the hedge.
