Big Labor Wanted Andrew Puzder Gone; Republicans Obliged

Corruption: Is it a coincidence that the two Trump Cabinet picks Democrats mounted their fiercest campaigns against happen to be the two that labor unions most wanted to go down in flames? Hardly.

Senate Democrats were so determined to do the bidding of the teachers unions and block Betsy DeVos as Education secretary that they held an all-night session in which they railed against her, in the hopes that this would convince one more Republican to oppose her nomination.

Having failed to achieve that goal, Democrats immediately turned their ire to the other Big Union target, President Trump's pick to head the Department of Labor, Andrew Puzder. On Wednesday, Puzder withdrew his nomination.

Last week, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer vowed that Democrats would use "everything we can to stop" Puzder's nomination. And indeed they did, lobbing scurrilous claims of spousal abuse (which Puzder's ex-wife denies) to bogus charges of rampant labor-law violations.

Puzder's critics claimed, for example, that 60% of Puzder's CKE Restaurants have been cited for workplace violations. The actual number: 1%.

"CKE has an exemplary record, and performs better on the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division inspections than most of its rivals," noted the Manhattan Institute's Diana Furchtgott-Roth in a piece for IBD.

He created his own problem by hiring an illegal alien and avoiding paying the taxes until he had to.
He advocated for amnesty, supported the Gang of Eight bill, should not have been nominated.

I agree with Lurkinanloomin who wrote:

“He created his own problem by hiring an illegal alien and avoiding paying the taxes until he had to.”

When I heard that report on the news, I figured that he was going to have to withdraw.

I guess PRESIDENT Trump’s spine was big enough for the entire GOP. I wonder how many illegals Little Johnny McCain has hired over the years.

Perry still remains at the top of our list as least favorite - and he was our Governor.

Nobody remembers Zoe Baird or Kimba Wood? Lani Guinier? Meg Whitman? Linda Chavez? Bernie Kerik?

Puzder is stupid and whoever on Obama’s staff who vetted him is a dangerous idiot.

You stated “whoever on Obama’s staff who vetted him is a dangerous idiot.” I’d say if it was a member of Obama’s staff that did the vetting, they did a BRILLIANT job of setting Puzder up as a “guaranteed fail.”

I’m guess that you meant “Trump’s staff.”

Concur; if we had to lose one Cabinet pick, I’m fine with him. BTW, Obama had to go through two Commerce Dept. picks (corrupt Bill Richardson and Judd Gregg) before he could get one confirmed. Not unusual, but Puzder brought a lot of bad stuff to the Administration: 1) the hiring of an illegal alien for home staff, ala Meg Whitman and many others; 2) claims by his ex of wife beating (she showed up on Oprah in a fright wig to disguise herself); and 3) support for the Gang of Eight proposal. He can do well as Ambassador to Switzerland or some such sinecure in reward for his support for Trump.

Puzder was deeply flawed. Move on. We have a swamp to drain!
