A Huge Cosmic Void Is Repelling Our Galaxy
Real Clear Science ^ | 30 Jan, 2017 | Ross Pomeroy

Today, in the journal Nature Astronomy, a team of researchers led by Hebrew University cosmologist Yehuda Hoffman has reported that they've found... nothing. To be clear, they've found something, but that something is essentially nothing.

Specifically, Hoffman and his colleagues have spotted an immense, naked region of space which they predict to be largely devoid of galaxies. Since this region is relatively empty of matter, it is exerting a repelling effect on the Local Group of galaxies, which includes Andromeda, the Triangulum Galaxy, and our own Milky Way.

The researchers made the discovery by visualizing the velocities of various galaxies in an area of space extending 1.7 billion light years across. They found that the flow of galaxies was largely directed towards the Shapley Supercluster 650 million light years away. The supercluster is populated by a large number of galaxies, making it gravitationally dense, and thus attractive. Moreover, the researchers found that the flow of galaxies emanated from a distinct region of space, which they dubbed the "Dipole Repeller." They believe this region to be a cosmic void of sorts. Together, it seems that the Shapley Supercluster pulls our Local Group of 54 galaxies while the Dipole Repeller pushes. The result is that our Local Group moves with a velocity of roughly 631 kilometers per second relative to the Cosmic Microwave Background, the leftover radiation from the Big Bang, toward the Shapley Supercluster.

Sounds like a lack of gravitational pull from the area of the void.

fascinating but.... and i am a lot denser than the empty space they discovered...... for sure... ha.... but how can an empty space or “void” repel us? If anything, a void is asking to be filled...in which case it might just Suck Us In?

or something like that.

i haven’t met an almost total void who repelled everyone since our last boss got fired

“Oh, nothing.”

Well, I knew a girl who was gravitationally dense, but NOT attractice.

“Since this region is relatively empty of matter, it is exerting a repelling effect on the Local Group of galaxies...”

As opposed to the “Great Attractor”? I guess that’s located in the other direction.

From Wiki...

The Great Attractor is a gravitational anomaly in intergalactic space at the center of the Laniakea Supercluster that reveals the existence of a localised concentration of mass tens of thousands of times more massive than the Milky Way. This mass is observable by its effect on the motion of galaxies and their associated clusters over a region hundreds of millions of light-years across. The Great Attractor is moving towards the Shapley Supercluster.[1]

These galaxies are all redshifted, in accordance with the Hubble Flow, indicating that they are receding relative to us and to each other, but the variations in their redshift are sufficient to reveal the existence of the anomaly. The variations in their redshifts are known as peculiar velocities, and cover a range from about +700 km/s to -700 km/s, depending on the angular deviation from the direction to the Great Attractor.

“Today, in the journal Nature Astronomy, a team of researchers led by Hebrew University cosmologist Yehuda Hoffman has reported that they’ve found... nothing. To be clear, they’ve found something, but that something is essentially nothing.”

TRUE.

“Specifically, Hoffman and his colleagues have spotted an immense, naked region of space which they predict to be largely devoid of galaxies.”

EVERY TIME THEY HAVE PREDICTED THIS BEFORE, IT WAS FOUND TO BE FALSE ONCE BETTER DETECTION EQUIPMENT WAS USED.

” Since this region is relatively empty of matter, it is exerting a repelling effect on the Local Group of galaxies, which includes Andromeda, the Triangulum Galaxy, and our own Milky Way.”

NO BASIS FOR THAT CLAIM.

“The researchers made the discovery by visualizing the velocities of various galaxies in an area of space extending 1.7 billion light years across. They found that the flow of galaxies was largely directed towards the Shapley Supercluster 650 million light years away.”

I THOUGH A GREAT MAJORITY OF OUR GALAXY CLUSTERS WERE HEADED TO THE GREAT ATTRACTOR.

” The supercluster is populated by a large number of galaxies, making it gravitationally dense, and thus attractive.”

THE ONLY STATEMENT ,SO FAR, THAT HAS MADE ANY SENSE.

” Moreover, the researchers found that the flow of galaxies emanated from a distinct region of space, which they dubbed the “Dipole Repeller.””

HAD TO MAKE SOMETHING UP. DARK MATTER AND DARK ENERGY WERE ALREADY TAKEN.

” They believe this region to be a cosmic void of sorts. “

AGAIN, NO FACTS.

“Together, it seems that the Shapley Supercluster pulls our Local Group of 54 galaxies while the Dipole Repeller pushes.”

OR THE SHAPLEY SUPERCLUSTER PULLS AND THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT HAS FORMED A STRING OF GALAXY CLUSTERS BEING PULLED, WHILE THE AREA THEY PULLED FROM IS EMPTY BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS BEING PULLED OUT OF IT.

” The result is that our Local Group moves with a velocity of roughly 631 kilometers per second relative to the Cosmic Microwave Background, the leftover radiation from the Big Bang, toward the Shapley Supercluster.”

WHAT SPEED WOULD IT HAVE IF NOT FOR THE DIPOLE REPELLER ? (HINT: THERE IS NO PROVABLE ANSWER)

how can an empty space or “void” repel us? If anything, a void is asking to be filled...in which case it might just Suck Us In?

It's not a void as within a gaseous substance like air, where air rushes in to fill. It's a region void of matter. No matter, no gravitational pull.
