1. Get There Last

KEYWORDS: 2016; 2017; celebrations; midnights
If you read this before 7am EST 01/01/2017, 2016 has NOT YET LEFT! Last ones to celebrate will be Midway Islands at UTC -11 (6am EST) although if anybody is at Baker or Howland Islands they wait another hour for 2017 at UTC -12!
First celebration of the New Year was in the Line Islands Time (LINT) at UTC +14. This has Kiribati-Christmas Island as its main land mass and it is due south of the Hawaii Islands which waited 24 hours to celebrate that same date! The 39 times referred to in the title indicates the number of time zones (26) and fractional zones (13) where midnight strikes in a given day cycle. And you poor people thought that there was just 24 hours in a solar day!
Wherever you are, my friends, have a happy and safe New Year!

But before the whole structured time zone business, there were perhaps HUNDREDS of time zones off as little as a few minutes, because it was based on the REAL midnight, not an arbitrary one.
