You are better off doing the following.

Slice in half

Give a twist to break apart

Pop the seed out.

Dice inside the skin.

Scoop out with a spoon.

Sprinkle with salt and lime juice.

Add a scoop to your turkey sandwich.

Goji berries
Noni fruit
Pomegranates
All these “super fruit” that are really just nutritious fruit that are about as good as some others more readily available, but it is novel, so let’s hype it, sell it for a fortune, and when the hype fades, find another.

The same thing is seen with cosmetics; in the US, they say “latest thing from Europe”, in the EU, they say “The latest thing from America”. In Asia, they can pick either one.

And on scrambled eggs. In a salad with tomatoes and cucumbers.

I have even heard they are good as ice cream. Have not tried that yet.

I believe they need to cross-pollinate. I believe they need to cross-pollinate.

Avocado trees are actually perfect, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. Thus, avocado trees are theoretically able to self-pollinate by producing both male and female flowers, albeit on different days, and at different times of the day. Wind and bees may help to accomplish the task.

A second avocado tree of the same type A or B will help to increase the odds that both male and female blooms will cross-pollinate.

Type A flowers open their female parts during the morning of the first day and their male parts on the second day's afternoon. Type B flowers wait until the afternoon of the first day to open the female parts and open their male parts the following morning.

And now you know the rest of the story...

"Peeling an avocado is impractical.

... not at all. Using a sharp knife cut the avocado into 4 quarters from the north pole to the south pole. The nut will hold the pieces together. Staring at small point of a quarter at one of the poles, simply peal back the skin all the way. It comes of easily. When the skin is all gone, push in at the top, and the quarters will fall off from the nut, usually intact.

I believe they need to cross-pollinate.

Actually, all avocado trees are hermaphrodites, meaning their flowers will be male one day, they will close, then open up the next day and be female. So, technically, they can self-pollinate, but that's a little hit or miss.

There are two varieties of avocado trees, A and B. The A-variety include, Haas, Gwen, (dwarf) Reed, etc. The B-variety include Fuerte, Bacon, etc.

What makes an avocado and A or B is A varieties open as female on the morning of the first day. The flower closes in late morning or early afternoon. The flower will remain closed until the afternoon of the second day when it opens as male. B varieties open as female on the afternoon of the first day, close in late afternoon and re-open in the male phase the following morning.

Usually growers will grow both A and B to enhance chances of pollinating.

Also, avocado trees grown from a seed rarely produce fruit. If they do, it'll take at least 5 years for that to happen. Fruiting trees are usually grafted from already mature, fruit producing trees. Avocado trees usually flower in January-February. If it's too cold, they won't flower and if they don't flower they won't produce fruit.

I live in Southern California and have three Avocado trees -- Haas, Fuerte and a Gwen. The Haas is in the ground and the Fuerte and Gwen are in pots. All three flowered, and set fruit. All the fruit dropped off when they were very small except for one Haas. Since this is the first year I've had them this isn't too surprising. Once they get more established, I expect them to produce fruit next year.

My prized avocado tree died several years ago of old age and disease. While it was a smooth skin variety, the fruits were HUGE, with the rich buttery flavor normally seen only in Hass varieties. It was a sad day when that tree was cut down. Replaced it with two trees, but neither of them produce fruit as fine as that old tree. So I planted two more this year.

Keeping fingers crossed...

BTW, there is a bug difference between an avocado from CALIFORNIA and one from FLORIDA.

California avos are the only way to go, they are buttery and creamy. Florida avocados can get watery and stringy. Best in CA are HAAS or HASS .... Avoid Fl.

Almost all avos from Mexico are good too.

The old one was probably a Fuerte. Too bad about it dying.

My wife's cousin brought us a paper grocery bag full of Fuertes. We were eating a half an avocado with every meal -- breakfast, lunch and dinner for two weeks. I've never gotten sick of eating avocados before, but at the end of the bag I was getting really tired of eating them.

After about two weeks of laying off them, I was back to loving them again. :D

Right now we've got only one fruit on the Hass. It's a little smaller than a pear. I'm waiting until it grows a little bigger, then I'm going to pick it and let it ripen so I can see how it tastes.
